so i have this awesome friend that gave me a detroit locker for my 8 inch rear end and was wondering if any one had warnings about putting this into my car. i know it clunks and will be noisy at times but that doesn't bother me, I'm 19 and want more( :burnout:)traction so i can beat my chevy lover friends haha. I'm going to college for automotives and have one more year left so i already know how to do rear end work right. so if any one has any disclaimers for me before install pls tell me. oh and if any one knos the torques specs, backlash, and what type of fluid you would run be great advice too.
PLS and THXS to all. :thumbs2:

That's awesome! Nice friend. Are you going to do a set of gears while you are there?

ya i know hu!haha he told me my dad gave it to him to use but he upgraded to a nine inch so it was useless to him. idk yet if i will or not. i don't have a nice wallet to a set with since my daily driver is my maverick and that thing does like gas and have other bills too. I'm thinking i may just press my old ring gear off and press it on to my locker....

Your leaving alot on the table with the 2.79s'/3.00s'... At least put some 3.55s' in it while its apart. You could get a set of summitt gears for 159.00.

Make sure it is an 28 spline axle, you will probably have to change the yoke. No special additives for the gears I use sythethic gear oil in mine.

Go for a set ot 3.50 gears, good on highway and decent at the track

    Have fun :thumbs2:

    BTW your car looks killer

haha. useless to him = money on craigslist at the very least lol. awesome its free though..sometimes i wish i went with a "posi" instead of the locker, especially around 90 degree turns in the city.

I have a locker in my 8" and it works great. Once you get used to its personality. Clunky on corners and parking as you'd expect but never though of it as a hinderance at all. Not sure what make mine is since it was in the car when I bought it. I wouldnt change it lets put it that way. I just run 75/90. Not a big fan of synthetic diff lubes.

i strongly suggest not to use synthetic diff lubricant also. i have found that the gear set wears out allot faster with synthetic. also synthetic will be more prone to leaking. at my work we use a straight 140wt. i would recommend lucas oil. 85-140 is good also. the thicker the oil the more protection it gives the gears.

Well I guess I learned something about synthetic today then, I knew it was more prone to leaking. Thats okay regular lube is cheaper.

synthetic seems to consume less power than natural but doesn't offer the protection that natural base oils do.
