On a previous thread, someone had a website posted that listed the lengths of 9" rearend of various vehicles. Does anyone know of such a site for the 8.8" rearend?

I ask because I think the 8.8 rearend, with disc brakes, out of a mid '80s Lincoln Mark VII will be a good length for the Maverick. Not only that, I believe the rearends from the LSC Mark VII's are posi.

There are no Versailles rearends to be found around here (at a decent price). I've also been told that 8.8" rearends from the '87-'93 'Stangs could work.

    Any advice is appreicated.

Just found the forum. I've had my Maverick for not quite two months. It's a six banger, but I have 351W and C4 that's going in it.

That 8.8 rearend is becoming the thing. I've been on several 'Stang sites and forums and the 8.8 sems to be the way to go.

Rex, GA is a mail delivery city only. I live in north Henry County, just nort of the Stockbridge City limits.

Hawkco; I lived in Stockbridge until about 6 months ago. Too busy for me. Moved to Jenkinsburg, between Jackson and Locust Grove. Maybe get together sometime, and discuss or work on these cars. Welcome to the board...now join the MCCI!!!

    Earl,
I've lived in the Stockbridge area 33 years, so I've seen it go from a small rural town to Atlanta South. I'd love to move farther away, but it already takes a stinking hour to go to my Buckhead office. If I move to where you are, it would add at least another 45 minutes to my commute. Bummer.

Hey! I have a friend who lives in Jenkinsburg. His name is Frank Martin. He is one of the reasons I love Maverick/Comets. He was a two or three years ahead of me in high school and he had a white with black stripe Comet with a hot little 302. He had peeped up the engine and it would fly. I loved the looks of it.

    We'll hook up one weekend.

    Thanks, Mavaholic.

I read most of the discussions on 8.8 rearends before I started this thread. I'm leaning more toward the Lincoln LSC or T-Bird Turbo Coupe housings because I believe they are an inch or two shorter. As far spring perches, etc., that's no problem for me. I can cut and weld most anything that will need to go on a Mav.

the january, 2004 issue of "super rod" magazine has an article titled "chevy 12 bolt vs.. ford 8.8", subcaption says " we regret to announce the death of the chevy 12-bolt rearend".:)

From what I understand, nearly all the 8.8 rears are all the same size. It is the axles/disc setup on some that make them different size.

The turbocoupe rear is actually 3/4 inch wider on each side in comparison to the 86-93 mustang 8.8. I believe the 94+ 8.8 is wider also.

I put an 8.8 turbocoupe thunderchicken 3.73 rear into my 86 5.0 stang. I didn't want the wheels to stick out more, + didn't feel like messing with a disc conversion, so I yanked the disc brake setup and axles out, and swapped the mustang axles back in along with the drum hardware and converted to drum. This also narrowed the length of the rear back down to the fox mustang size.

FYI, the turbocoupe rear is 4 lug, so is the fox mustang. If you want 5 lug, all you have to do is swap in two drivers side ranger axleshafts into each side of the 8.8, you can even carry over the ranger drum brakes, and you will have a successful 5 lug swap, (or you can get fancier with the sn95 rear disc, but again, that may push the wheels out some)

    Jeremy,

I'd like to know a little more about your rear end from a Turbo Coupe. I found a Turbo Coupe, made in Feb '86, in yard today and the rear end is complete. What can you tell me about it?

    my 8.8 rear maverick!!

hi EVERYBODY, im new here. i have a 1970 maverick whit a 8.8 REAR END!!
I make this job myself like a year and a half ago and its easy. all you have to do is "shave" (gas flame) all the suspension parts from the newer rearend (be careful dont mess the brake lines)and weld the perches from the old rearend to the 8.8, (electric weld!) I use a 1989 mustang GT posi rearend, T5 transmission,
if you use the old transmission you have to custom build a new Driveshaft because the yokes and bolt holes are diferent, i didnt have problems because the mustang driveshaft fit whit no MODIFICATIONS!
i remember that one of the rearends was wider but i dont remember which one! i have to check my backspacing now, the original maverick backspacing is 4.5 inches (i check that in summit they have a list of backspacings and boltpaterns(pdf)) here: http://support.summitracing.com/scr...va=714&p_li=&p_faqid=790&p_created=1015268812

i custom build a transmission mount, looks ugly but it works, my car was a tree speed so i use the pedal assembly, and make this cable cluch sistem that give me a lot of problems but it work fine now. if you want it more easy you can buy a conversion kit.
then i installed ranger 5 lug axles and drums like tree months ago, the thing is that one of the ranger axles are smaller than the other one ( because of the negative rearend on this trucks) so take the 4 lug axle to the junkyard and check size before you buy.

you can use the newer rearend of the GT mustangs (94-up) they have 5 lugs and disc brakes, i wanted one of these but i did not find any GT mustang, only 6 cilinders whit negative rearends, so thats why i buy the 89 parts. my rear drums are fine,i have no problems geting the car to stop, but i think disk brakes are cool.

the brake hose on the 8.8 dif fit whit no modifications.
