Hi all, I'm new to the board. Any way, a family at my church has a 74 2door white maverick that they might sell me. They are the original owner from 74, and the only thing replaced on the car was a new headliner (said that a bicycle handle ripped it open... some how) and American Raceing Wheels. The husband said that the car runs good, but they dont run it often, and never really have (so I assume the milage is somewhat low). But that their son does start it up and drive it every now and then, so it DOES run. Any way, the car looks to be in good shape, no rust from what I can see (Arizona car, dry climate), I didn't have long to stay, nor did I have a camera. I didn't get to look under the hood, but I'm praying that there is a 302 under there!! About how much should this car go for? Sorry I don't have much more information, but the car looks very good (I have worked on old mustangs and El Caminos before, so I'm not just saying it looks good, it actualy does for being original). They are asking $8,000 for it, which to me sounds a bit much. What should be a price range I should shoot for? I really have know Idea, because I have never sold/owned an older car before, just worked on them (mostly upholstery work). and I don't know much about Mavericks. Here are some questions I have if I get the car: 1. What is the widest wheel/tire combo that will fit in the rear with out having to tub or having them sticking out like a lowrider? 2. If the car doesn't have a 302, would it be worth it to try to mod the I6 engine aside from super/turbo charging? I saw a speck sheet that said like 80 something HP for the small I6... I'm a car guy, that will NEVER do! Would it be worth it to try to mod (cam, rockers, intake/exhaust and so on) the I6? Or just yank it for something larger? 3. Will a 350 chevy block fit into the engine bay? They are a common engine, and I'd beable to get one easy. what would be a good choice for a new engine? Probably something stroked, maybe 302 stroked? Thanks for any help! And sorry for such a looong post, I'm really excited about my first "old" car! (hehe, yea, yall know what that's about!)
$8,000.00 sounds a bit, well ok, alot high to me......... maybe half that if the car is in MINT condition.
no way If is was a 74 Grabber in very good condition with a V8 and 3-speed on the floor I might consider $4000 for it. I just don't think big bumpered cars are worth it. Most Maverick fanatics would take a 70 - 72 Maverick over a 73 - 77 any day. Take the $8000 to traderonline.com and search for Mavericks on the classic page and see what you can do ... Dan
every maverick posted on ebay was less than 2000.00. the mavrick given away at Carlisle auto show in mint condition was only valued at 4000.00. save your money
ooh, thanks guys! hehe, I guess I REALLY don't know my Mavericks Thanks loads!!! I am also looking for a Chevelle or a Nova (I know a guy who owns a chevelle club here in Phoenix, maybe something will happen
I am also in phoenix. If you want to see what is possible with a Maverick you should come see mine. I would like to see what this $8000 maverick looks like. Just yesterday I heard of a guy selling a 70 small bumper 2 door with 302 for $1500 and it was supposed to be in pretty good shape. Mavericks are fun because if you go to a car show there aren't any there except for yours and maybe mine, theres lots of mustangs and chevelles and lame Novas. Be different. I work at the Autozone at 43 ave and Dunlap and drive my Maverick there quite often if you want to see it. or look at my link below.
It's not an $8,000 Maverick, thats just what she is asking haha! Thats why I asked on here, because it sounded way high to me. Yea, thats one reason I would like to have a maverick, cuz hardly knowone else does!! Yours looks sweet! Nice f 150 too I won't have the money to buy ANYTHING untill January, so there is no rush for me, I'm just out looking. There IS a Maverick in my appartment that has never moved (I have asked around and so far, no body has claimed it... front desk has no clue either), it looks pretty bad tho... would probably cost more to fix it up than to get one that is already decent. Ryan, I have never seen your Maverick before (Phoenix is sooo big!), but I DO go to a car show on 35th and Northern, just about every friday night I'm there with my bicycle just browsing hehe! I have seen ONE Maverick there, but it wasn't yours, it was a "fixer-upper" if ya know what I mean You wouldn't happen to remember where you heard about that Maverick for sale would you Ryan? If you do, could you let me know right here on the forum, or email me: buck@doctor.com I'd appreciate it I don't really care what the car LOOKS like, just as long as it runs. Actualy, I'd like to go primer, cuz I hear alot of peoples nice cars getting broken in to (but havn't heard of to many Mavericks being busted)
hello, and welcome to the club. I would also suggest going with the maverick. It has several selling points over the "other" old cars. I would say one of the biggest selling points is the weight. An early 2 door mav only weighs 26-2800 lbs!!! Try putting a 302 into a car that weighs as much as an escort!! The 302 is one of the most highly modified, built and cheap to build engine around thanks to the late model 5.0 scene. Once again, a real clean maverick on the roads is rare!! I have killed many a car in a race, and you know the only thought in their head was "what the hell was that??"" Help us preserve the rest of the mavericks, don't go chevelle or mustang
I used to go to the show on northern quite often either with the truck or Maverick. But for the past year or so the Maverick hasn't seen many roads except for around the neighborhood. I've been too busy. The Maverick I heard of was from a guy talking about it at Autozone. It was near 43 ave and Glendale behind some storage place. Not sure if it was at an apartment or house. The guy was fixing a maverick for these people and they had the other one they were selling. If I see him again I'll ask him about it. My roommate might be selling his 74 2 door 302 Mav in a couple months too. It's in decent shape but could use a carb. and some front end bushings.
Hey, if you can give me any info on the 70 Mav, I'd appreciate it! If I can get a ride from one of my friends (and find some free time!) I'll head down to 43rd and Glendale sometime and see if I can find the guy who is selling it my self and have a talk with him. Thanks! Jeremy: Yea, I figure that a modified 302 in a Maverick (I guessed 3k pounds for the car, a bit high ) would beable to more than hold its own on the road! I think the main thing that will get me a maverick will be the price. If they are as cheap as yall say, I will have plenty of money to modify the engine/wheels/tires. I am hopeing to get about 7-8k for my truck back home... so that leaves me with plenty of money! (but some of it will go for my college tuition...).
yeah...becuse it's a chevy...see sooo many model "t" fords with 350's..one guy here has one with a 427 cobra...bet that thing rips...
He's right about a 350 small block being a common engine and from what I hear they are a piece of cake to rebuild, but I could never stick a GM engine in my Mav just wouldn't be right I don't care if it could belt out more power then it's Ford Competitor theres always a way to fix that Secondly Mav's make great project cars if you find one even if it's not in mint condition as long as the body is good and it runs (or even if it doesn't run) i'd buy it you'd be surprised how little you'll pay I only paid $250 for my 71 Grabber it's not in the worlds best shape but hey for that price it's worth it, plus it was already in running condition when I got it. Believe me as many others on here will agree you'll get addicted quick. I don't think it's worth $8000 well maybe if it had a 427 Cobra in it lol, has anybody ever put one of those in a Maverick?
The mavericks are great cars, and if this one is extremely clean, probably worth around $2000. If you put a chevy motor in it, the value will drop to around $100 no matter how clean it is. Stick with the Ford engine...they came with them originally, so it'd be easier to work on. You'd end up using either a motor plate or a mustang II front end to make the chevy motor fit...the engine mounts are much further forward on the GM than they are on the ford. Headers would be a total nightmare, the siamesed exhaust ports in the center doesnt agree with shock towers well. http://www.geocities.com/mavman687/bym.htm
