So a friend of mine and I are tearing down the motor because it was getting oil in the coolant (but no coolant in the oil) and there was a pretty good coolant leak down the middle of the intake side. Figured, cracked head gasket. So we tear it down, get the head off, all that business... and the head gasket was already a Felpro (so it's been done before), and did show some signs of bubbling around where the leak was.

What troubles me is that that point is also where this weird cutout is on the head. I'm new to these engines and my '74 Chiltons doesn't show the underside of the head. Is this normal??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. We're taking a break until tomorrow since the sun's going down.

There was slight discoloration on the block there but no holes or damage or uneven-ness. The head gasket was not actually cracked but had bubbles in it making it uneven and brittle.

check or have the head checked to see if it's flat. the head bolts may not have been torqued down either in the correct pattern or correct ft. lbs...:yup:
