Hey all, I am having an issue with my carburetor and the choke closing when the pedal is pressed. I understand that there may be a vacuum that opens it as it warms. Does anyone know which line is responsible for that? I have a single barrel carb on it. The car starts up but when dies when the gas is pressed. I hope this is somewhat clear. I can have it towed to mechanic in Dallas, GA but would really like to see if it is a quick fix. Thanks.
Sounds like a linkage issue. Try adjusting the choke too. If all else fails, take the choke off. They are over rated.
this is activated by a heat sensitive coil in the little round black part. as that coil gets warm it releases more. there was a stock tub that went from the bottom to your exhaust manifold. it can be adjusted to work without it. if it is closing completely and not running then it probably needs to be adjusted. there is usually a screw on the throttle side that sets the "cold idle" and turning the black thing adjusts how lean or rich at what temp. if your warm idle is good (when the spring releases and the flap stays open instead of closed) then i would only adjust those two pieces until it idles cold and releases when warm enough. probably not a clear description, i may have to post a tech article with pics on this (gets across better... ) madman, you keep saying that. havent spent much time where it snows have ya
71 Maverick Choke issue/200 I6 Carb upgrade??? Thank you both. I noticed that the black round thing connected to the choke is missing a screw on the bottom out of the three. Will this cause issues by not sealing. I'm thinking that heat is escaping from it. Autozone has the same carb rebuilt for $118.00. I have a 200 I6. Is there a better carb that I can run without sending the engine into shock that may cost a few bucks more but will be more reliable?! Preciate the help guys..
no the missing screw shouldn't matter. actually despite my razzing of madman, you probably could remove the choke where you live. im sure it never gets down to the close to freezing levels that really require it. set it so the butterfly stays open (should be full LEAN on the little indicator) by spinning the black dial forward.
I've lived in New Mexico, Okinawa, Oregon, and North Dakota.... Removing the choke would be wiser than towing the car. A new carb is a waste of cash. Fix the choke or remove it.
