Does anyone know right off hand if the 5.0 in the 85-86 Grand Marquis was a roller engine?

Is there any way to tell besides ripping the intake off?

I believe I read something about a gray oil pan being on a roller engine but that seems to be and odd way to tell.

Probably not,I think they started drilling all 302 blocks for roller valvetrain around 87-88.Mustangs were roller from '85-up though.

the '85 Grand Marquis I robbed the 5.0 out of was a roller cam engine. Also had the early firing order. The '85 T-bird that a buddy bought was drilled for the spider, but had a flat-tappet cam.

    Go figure.

I've seen mid 80's Mercurys and Lincolns in the junkyards around here both ways. Seems it's just a luck of the draw weather you get a roller or not out of those cars. Dosen't seem to be any rhyme or reason to why they put rollers in some and not in others.

cant you just pull a valve cover and pushrod real quick and look down the pushrod hole with a flashlight and see if there is a lifter guide / hold down assembly? non roller lifters arent gonna have a positioning guide.
