I got my 351, its a 72, not a 70. Casting on the block is D2AE 6015 BA-10 What are the options for 72, do I have crappy heads or 1.84/1.5 heads?
1.84 intakes up to 77 1.54 exhausts up to 77 use the "late" model pistons 13 cc dish vs 19cc dish..nothin wrong with the 72 windsor...I'd build it
Also use and aftermarket timing gear and chain to be on the safe side. Nor sure if that modle got caught in the emissions mess or not. I have a 69 351w with c9oe heads and love it. It has real shallow dished pistons which with the c9 heads gives it pretty healthy compression. Not sure how much but on a compression test I read around 175lbs. Premiem fuel almost always. lol clint
yea, I know 70 is 9.5:1, you're right about that. As long as I have the big valve heads to start with, I'm happy. I can deal with 8.6:1 comp for the 73 model 351. I'm debating whether I'll use the 351 or just pop the heads on my 302 after I build it. The 351 was low milage in a Cougar or something, the car caught fire and a bud got it for cheap, I swapped a free car for it, so even if it had the same heads, I got something for free. The fire melted the temp sending unit, but the valve covers still have paint on them. Its been sitting indoors for close to 10 years. I'm thinking about dropping the 351 in there to play with while I make up my mind. Will the 302 balancer and pully fit the 351 crank?
You got a good engine, year wise anyway. Small chambers, big valves, and ports. The compression was dropped via pistons, and the HP rating was dropped that year due to different testing standards. Those heads will compete with most aftermarket heads after a top notch porting. Personally, I would build the W, but those heads would do great on a 302 if you don't want any swap hassles. Most all of the accessories on your 302 will bolt right onto your W. Including, but not limited to: Balancer Pulleys Flywheel Tranny Starter Engine mounts Some W parts that won't swap: Oil pan Intake Distributor Headers (in a Maverick application) If you do the W swap, you can get an aftermarket crank for $300 and top them with 302 pistons... instant 393w stroker! Costs only slightly more than working your old crank, especially when you figure that 302 pistons are generally cheaper than W pistons. Good luck Dave
An aftermarket set of aluminum heads will be about the same price as if not cheaper than a high quality port job on set of factory heads.
Depends on how much you do yourself, who you know, and how far you want to go with them. Valve preference makes a lot of difference too. This arguement goes on all the time... I don't and won't take sides, after all, the heads I want to run both cost more than ported Ws and would outflow ported Ws with ALL the tricks. However, if I were on a budget and had a set of 69-74 W heads in hand... I would port them myself, after doing a LOT of research on the subject, and use 1.84/1.50 valves rather than running the price up. Ported W heads are way overlooked. Dave
All I'm looking for is a good basic port job on the exhaust, which I've played with in the past. Intake flows pretty decent on those heads, but the exhaust is just about the same as the 302 heads from what I've read. Port the exhaust, get the valves done (not big deal, just redone for a rebuild) and I've got a cheap set of pretty good heads.
