I have an original 302 maverick motor that is the new rate scale 138hp. Is this still a 200hp motor but when they changed the way they grade horsepower the numbers changed but it still makes 200hp. Also what's the average 1/4mile for the mav's?

i think the net and gross HP ratings mean the motor makes 200hp but by the time they bolt up all the accesories and put it in the car its only getting 138 to the wheels.

bone stock i would think a '73 would be good for a low 16, high 15 sec 1/4 but thats just a guess

Not much changed in 72 other than the way they rated power.
Among the small changes were a slight drop in compression and retarding the camshaft. Then there was another .5 point of compression drop for 73.

The new method of power rating was more realistic than before.

To answer your question directly though... No.
Even if a later 'net' engine was rated at 'gross', the loss of compression and cam timing would lower the 'gross' rating as well.

Oh, and 'net' ratings were at the flywheel. Not the rear wheels. Just like 'gross'.
Just that 'net' meant the engine was rated with all the accessories that were on the engine while in the car.
'Gross' was rated without ANY accessories at all.
'Gross' ratings didn't even count in a production exhaust system. The old way of rating was cheating the numbers unrealisticly.

mid to high 16s are what most stock, good condition v8 Mav/Coms run.I've got an old article(Hot Rod maybe?)on the new '71 Grabber. It was the v8,three on the tree w/2.79 gears. They got a 17.1 out of it.
