Anyone out there have a 289 in their maverick, got the opportunity to pick one up fairly cheap. How much work would it be to convert from a 200? Any comments are appreciated, thanks.

Might as well go with the 302 since the 289 quit production in 1968 but it would be the same as a 302 in installing i would say..

if you already have a 289 it mounts up the same as the 302 so just get all the v-8 parts off a donor. you can use the search and find pretty much the whole list, even some cool upgrades like AOD for cruising or taurus fan conversion for better cooling ;)

rebuild and if someone gave you the 289 sell it to someone with a car that needs one to be "correct" for extra cash

Make sure the 289 takes a 6 bolt bell. Very early ones were 5-bolt.

Thanks, I'll have to check that out. I am by no means a mechanic, I have a buddy of mine that is, I just have to be his whipping boy for the work he does for me.

There was a red Comet up here a while back with a 289 in it that was for sale, car was mint, just stunning. The motor was not original but it sounded nice and with a 289 it was just different and to me sounded cool to just say , "Yeah it has a 289 in it". It's your car put in it what you want.(y)

I had a 289 Special in an old military jeep once. That thing was a blast. Had solid lifters and a 2 v carb on it. It was a very fast revving engine. You could hardly keep up with the gear changes it revved so fast.
There is really isn;t that much difference in the cubic inches. Both can be made to run great with the right parts.
Pretty sure all 289's came with the 3 bolt harmonic balance also and that can cause some aggravation when trying to find all the right pullies.
If the 289 is ready to drop in you would be money ahead.
