Does anyone know what Ford did to lower the HP of this engine from 95 HP in the early 70's to 1976 when it put out only 75HP? Or perhaps the better question is what will I need to do/undo to restore the power that used to be there before smog control? Johndep 76 4 door 200 6-cyl
welcome to the board! uhhhh get an old 200 from 1970 and rebuild it. better yet, drop in a 302!!!!!!!!
Realy the 76 200 makes more power than the 70 200 because of the better carb intake head and exhaust manifold but it looks like the older one makes more power because they used to rate horse power another way untill '70 or '71 .
The '70 had a compression ratio of 8.7 to 1 while the '76 had that of 8.3 to 1. But yes, the later model years were rated atr the rear wheels while the early models were rated at the flywheel with no accessories attached...
So T.L. that's why early 70's Maverick 302's were rated 210 horses and our 73's were rated at 140 horses. but then it dropped even lower so what is a 73 Maverick's horse power in todays numbers?
Yes. At the rear wheels may not be completely correct though. They measured gross pre 1972, which was at the flywheel with no accessories. They measured net after that, which was with all accessories bolted up. At least that is what I have read in a number of sources. It would be interesting to get real rear wheel numbers and compare them to net numbers and really see if there is a difference.
Thanks for the info Engine swap is a no-go... For some reason, I want to keep the 6 cylinder, only 61,000 original miles and running great... Being 1976, I assumed the engine was restricted by smog stuff, and this was the cause of HP loss. Is this partly true? and if so, is there anything I can do to minimize the loss? yup pull all the smog crap off and reset the timing , here is a web site with I6 info www.fordsix.com
