my 71 200 I6 has issues... from an idle, in drive, if you dont accelerate EXTREMELY slow and tenderly it will bog down and eventually die (occasionally backfire). Ive done some blind tinkering on the carb and improved it a little bit but not much. Any ideas? im assuming it has something to do with the Gas/oxygen mixture but i do not know how to fix this problem.
There is an accelerator pump inside the carb - it gives a shot of gas into the engine when the pedal is pressed to prevent the bogging down you are describing. My thought is it is not operating as it should. A common failure on an old carb due to the rubber plunger of the pump breaking down. Best to just get a rebuild kit from your local parts house and go over the whole carb. The 1bbl's are very easy to work on.
thanks! i was planning on rebuilding it tomorrow, simply because its overdue, so that's great news that it may be such a simple fix!. thanks again.
Those carbs also have a linkage on the inside of the carb for the pump. Sometimes it will fall off and not work correctly.
Get a nice clean place to do the work. Follow the instructions in the kit, and you'll be fine. It'll be the best $20-some you'll spend.
