Im planning on running 26.1tall by 10in.wide tires in back on 15x7.5/8 stock steel rims. Other than a slightly narrowed rearend will any other mods be necessary. I plan on swapping in a built 8.8
Not sure what your exact look is your going after but, I have a 10" rim with the M/T Sportsman PRO tires on the rear... 29" tall with 10" tread and 13" sec. I wanted the wheels tucked up inside covering half of the upper sidewall. I had to do a mini-tub and narrow the 9" rearend, then slide the leaf springs inwards while still using the Cal-Tracs. A 26.1 tires is not that tall so, you wont have much sidewall roll as I would with the 29" tire but, if your tire is a True 10" tread, I would be a little worried with a 7.5" rim... some other options I was thinking of was using an 8" rim and I had a hard time finding tires that would allow a 10" tire on a 8" rim. Again, not sure what your plans are but if it's for the street or strip and you want a Street DOT Slick for drag racing, you might be able to use a 8" tire depending on what E.T. you plan on running. That's what I'm going to do... just buying a 8" steel wheel for the strip with a custom offset to keep the wheel near the wheel well so it wont look sunk inside since I'll have a narrowed rear. I'm only using a 8" DOT slick to run at the strip with. I'm guessing I'll be running 12.20's in the 1/4.
Hey Auburn Auburn, thanks for your helpful reply. I plan for my car to be a 72 grabber clone resto-rod. Very stock appearing inside & out, with only subtle cues on the exterior appearance. Such as p275/50r-15{or bigger?} bfgoodrich drag radials out back. But I want to still use stock hub caps and trim rings and stock size 14 in front. I also want stock back spacing. What is the stock back spacing on A stock stamped steel 15x8, do they vary? This is an area in which Im inexperienced. I guess what I really want to know is how big you can go without modifying body or wheel wells. Relocating springs and narrowing the rear end are OK. Oh! by the way street only.
Mavaholic, you might want to jump in on this one. T-BO, I have the same wheels as Mavaholic but his are 8", the size your looking or asking about. I'm not sure what he did with his rear end but, it has that "Stock" look to it. Again, I had to do a mini-tub so I could tuck the tires up there but, I know from the measurements I could have done an 8" rim without doing a mini-tub. As far as the factory offsets your asking about, I can't help you there. There are guys on here that are FAR more qualified to ask that question. I'm new enough here to be dangerous... I just happen to answer tgis topic due to the fact that I am in the building stage that your question was in reguards to.
I am running a BFG Drag Radial 275-60-15 that's 28.5" tall on a 8.5" centerline with a 4 7/8: bs. Fits well, almost looks tubbed...Well...ALMOST! Scotty P
Scott- I was trying to find out more about that tire and didnt have any luck from the local store or the BFG web site... what is that actual TREAD width on that tire? I can pass that on to my buddy who's looking at staying with the 8" wheel
I have 8" rims with 4 1/2" backspacing. 265R60 tires. I had my 9" built by Currie and just had them narrow it 1/4" on each side for clearence. I put these on my stock 77 just to see how they fit and they just did touch the springs. I also mounted 26X10" slicks on rims with the same specs for racing. They fit fine. MY inner fender rails are rolled up but I'm not sure it is necessary. This was something I did decades ago.
Just last weekend I picked up a set of 15" slicks 26" tall & 10" wide. They were given to me by a friend. All I had to do was purchase rims to mount them on. I went to Les Schwab & got a steel wheel mag 8" wide with a 3.75" offset ($40 each). I put them on my stock 73 Comet 8" rearend & there was plenty of clearance. About 1" from the leaf spring & 1" from the fender well. I haven't rolled the edges on my wheel wells, cause I have the chrome strip around the wells. Hope this helps.
Thanks guys! With this info I can get started acquiring parts. Seems that mavs have more room in those wheelwells than I would have thought.
