My uncle and I made the 3 hour trip to northern VA to pick up a nice '71 Comet GT. I saw it on Ebay and Craigslist and since it wasn't too far away we went and looked at it about 3 weeks ago. After some more negotiation they finally got together on a price and we went and and got it last Saturday. It is a 302 V8 car with PS and factory AC. It is a southern car and only has 58K miles on it. It was repainted about 8 years ago and was owned by an elderly man for about 13 years. When he passed away the guy we bought it from got it from the estate (he was friends with the owner). One thing I noticed today when we were trying out another set of wheels was the car has front disc brakes. Were disc brakes available on the '71 Comet GT's? The car has an 11/70 build date. Here are some pics. It will go nicely with his Grabber Blue '71 Grabber and my '72 Grabber. We haven't had a chance to do any cleaning or detailing under the hood yet. We tried a set of Torque Thrust D wheels on the car today that we had laying around. Here is a pic of his '71 Grabber: And my '72 Grabber:
Nice one... Congrats... BTW no disc brake option on any Mav/Comet till '74 model, they've been swapped...
Thanks!! I was pretty sure they weren't available in'71 but wanted to check. It was a pleasant surprise when we pulled off the front Magnum 500 wheel and saw the discs there.
Thanks!! Both his cars are quite a bit nicer than mine, but I'm gathering up some NOS parts for mine and hopefully will be able to get some body work done and a nice paint job in the future. Thanks!! He does have a set of front lowering springs already. Thanks!! Thanks!! We decided after the wheel swap today that we thought that the Magnums looked better on this color combination too. The Magnums are 14x7's with 205/70 front tires and 215/70 rear tires. He is going to order a brand new set of 15x7 Magnums, 235/60 tires and the black background Mercury God's head center caps for the car in the morning.
Beautiful cars! Your Grabber looks like a clone of mine (except nicer). Same exact color scheme, interior, everything.
