And it's still a bad idea to this day. Hopefully, you're running minimum air pressure in them (like 20 to 25 psi). The stock upper shock mounts are not designed to handle the weight and impact that air-shocks subject them to.
So it appears that where you get the springs makes a difference. My friend got his from J.C. Whitney. The car sat just right, but rode super stiff.

I believe "where U get them does make a difference". I'll have to check the Espo site and see what their 4 leafs ratings are. My springs have a rating of just over 800lbs rating. It rode like it had 1-ton truck suspension. The car at cruising spd "40mph" and abv wud have serious bump steer affect when it went over any kind of bump that wud not effect most other vechicles. I had/have 70 series tires on the car inflated @ abt 24psi, the car had plenty rubber between the road and my behind and was still unsatisfactory. I can only imagine what it wud have been w/ 50series, inflated to proper pressure. Removing the bottom leaf and installing the KYB shocks was the best thing I have done to the suspension to date.

If you are on a tight budget (like my whole life, it seems ... lol) here are some other possibilities ... http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=50105 I have yet to drive the car, but I can tell you that pushing down on the rear bumper is pretty stiff and laying under the car an bench-pressing the car up is fairly easy. This is with worn out original springs, too. I want to combine some Econoline leafs with the original main. Might take a couple tries to get it right, but I think this will dial it in pretty well and help get rid of the built-in understeer tendencies. I run these shocks on my DD Explorer Sport, and they ride great and make it handle really well ... much more like a car than an SUV. Firm, but not uncomfortable. I have had good experience with them on a previous small SUV too.
