I have a 71 comet thats needing tons of work I want to do it right all the way from the beginning. If someone could steer me in the right direction on where to start. Id appreciate it big time. This the first vehivle ive started to restore so any tips or dos and dont. Im up for hearing any advice. And thanks to all the the people in this forum. Since I was young people have bugged me about holding onto the old car but I love it. Nice to see other people see the beauty in these old cars.

:Welcome: from Atlantic Canada! I would start by pouring a bucket of water down the cowl vents in front of the windshield and watching the front floor boards for water. If they get wet, move-on! Ask me how I know...

    welcome
these are the best comments Ive heard the guys give someone new.

pour water down the air vents in front of the windshield behind the hood. depending on the condition of the rest of the car it would be a good idea to move onto another car if the floors inside get wet.

in order to fix the cowl the windshield the whole dash, all of the electrical and the hood have to come off and thats just a start.
then you have to drill all of the 30+ spot welds that hold it in place on the outside. after that you have to CUT the lower part of the cowl out and have a used replacement ready to weld back in place. then you have to start with a protective weather coating to make sure that area never rusts again.
once youve gotten that far you have to weld it all back in place and put all of the other parts of the car back in. search the boards using the search icon and youll find a few posts that show the repair. its a major job just to type it all out imagine what it takes to actually do it.

    good luck

As others have mentioned, the cowl vents are the most likely to give you grief, then if you find the water running into the car, pulling up the carpets up is next to see what is left of the floors - if your cowl ia leaking, it may not come to having to replace the entire cowl but just the vent rings in side of the cowl - this is part that I had to replace :)
