While at a car show a few years back a guy walked past my Maverick and thought it was a Charger. Seriously? I don't know where he got that idea. It's not as if they look so much alike. Another time someone mistook the Maverick for a Plymouth Volare. ( spelling? ) That little bit of confusion I can understand. The headlight buckets do look somewhat alike, but that's about as far as it goes. One time at yet another car show a guy all but insisted the Maverick was a Pinto. WTH? I think I know what kind of car I own. I was just about to show the knucklehead the car's original window sticker and owners manual when 'smartguy ' finally spotted the MAVERICK emblem on the grill. He kind of got that ' DUH' look on his face and wandered off. It still makes me chuckle to this day.
Mines been called all the usual many times, Camaro, Nova, Mustang, Pinto, etc. with Mustang being the most common. The one that threw me, someone called it a Javelin once.. lol In the last few years it's become much more common for people to actually know it's a Maverick then it used to be. I guess the magazine coverage and what not of these cars is helping in that respect. It's also become a near daily thing for people to ask if it's for sale. When I first started driving it back in '05, it didn't seem like anyone knew what it was.
My car's been called everything listed here, happens all the time. The best one was at a cruise-in a couple of years ago, when it still had the 302. I listened to this dude explain to his friend how cool it was that my Camaro "still had the original 302!" See, the Chevy 302 is extremely rare 'cause most people yank them out and install a 350... (I guess the only offensive thing I did to mine was COVER IT IN FORD BLUE ) He then rattled off a bunch more hysterically wrong details about my car. His friend seemed impressed, so I just let it go. I couldn't do it.
I hear this sort of thing all the time at the car shows. There is always a really smart dad or husband schooling someone in his family about cars he knows so little about - it is hilarious to listen to all of the "facts"
Yeah the last guy I talked to said his '67 Maverick from way back when had a factory 351w like mine. Told him that's awesome, he should've kept it...
Interesting but I don't tolerate total BS would have said something like, yeah you should have kept it, especially since Mavericks weren't built till 70 & never had a 351 from factory... Then I'd probably tell him how there wasn't even a 351 till the 1969 Mustangs, Torinos, ect got them...
Yeah, usually this happens when I'm trying to be somewhere, hence the driving, so I rarely call out the BS. However I will do it in a heartbeat when it's accompanied by a little jab... You know the type who feels compelled to one-up everybody on every little thing, he's always got a better story... That guy I'll lead on with a stream of questions, making him dig the hole as deep as I can until he realizes I know exactly what he's doing.
i get "Pinto" all the time. at the beginning it was funny, i can see the resemblance, but now is getting a bit on my nerves, sometimes i ask them, if pinto's use to sound like these? and i step on the gas.
