I am planning on swapping out the factory I6 for a 302 in my 75 Maverick. I will be using a 5.0 EFI engine from an 88 F-150. I will be doing away with the EFI and going with a carb. I will also be swapping out the Oil pan for a front sump pan and swapping out the timing cover (which I still have to find one). Now for my Question. While I have the engine out what all do I need to look for and or change out?
I've got 2-3 extra timing covers if you need one, $25 + the ride. I would also swap out the flat tappet cam in that block for a roller cam, it's a roller block, you just need the cam and hardware and possibly drill and tap the lifter spyder bosses for the retainer. Just don't drill or tap too deep, the #2 and 4 cam bearings are directly under those two bosses. Then you'll need a Duraspark distributor to match the cam. If you go roller, run down to the local parts house and buy a new reman 85 Mustang Ho distributor (one spec'd for the manual transmission) this one will have a steel cam gear to match the roller cam. Next, buy a long carbide porting bit and take 30-45 minutes to remove the Thermactor bumps from the exhaust port roofs. Once you remove one, take a fishing magnet and remove the filings, follow up with a vacuum, then carb cleaner. You will need a 50 oz/in flywheel/flexplate to match your transmission's bellhousing. There's probably more that I don't recall, someone else can chime in with. Intake ? Get one of the following: Performer RPM, (or Air gap) Weiand Stealth, Ford A321, Shelby "Cobra", Ford C9OX, Edelbrock F4B, or the old Torker 289.
Can I use the pully set up that is factory on the 88 f-150 engine in the maverick? water pump, serp. belt etc.?
Also, I have a timing cover, and when you swap to carb, make sure you get a distributor with a gear compatible with roller cam. My personal favorite is the HEI, cheap all over ebay and effective. i used to use this same setup (roller cam, 2bbl, HEI, headers) on my dirt track and demo derby cars with great success. You could also just get the correct gear and swap it onto a distributor. I have a 302 points distributor set up this way on the shelf from my demo derby cars (crown vics)
He's got a 75 , should already have a Duraspark setup. Just needs the V8 distributor now. My 77 was a six banger car, I'm still running the stock Duraspark setup it came with, with an 85 Stang distributor in my 331.
