What is the extra port next to the carb ports? and what can I do with it?
    Can I block that?
What was the original purpose for this?

Probably for the EGR, you can block it off.

Yup, that's what it is. Block it off, you don't need it, actually you'd be better off with a better intake that lacks that feature.

My stepson can upgrade the intake. And the heads for that matter. I'm just doing the bare minimum so he has a starting point. It's a 351W. Just fired it for the first time yesterday.

Yup, looks like its an EGR. I had to block it off because it leaked and made the engine run horrible anyway - MUCH better without it. What I originally did to get rid of it was make a small plate that bolted over it until i gout the funds to buy a new intake. Replacing it really isn't complicated. If I remember correctly, it's only 12 bolts, a water neck and a temperature sender. OH and a couple vacuum ports. Just make sure that you're not in CA and require a smog, and then you can buy a new one that doesn't have the EGR provisions. They have a whole bunch on Summit. :D
