how can i tell what inline 6 is in my car? vin says 250 but you no how that go's.its a 1970 maverick.
I believe easiest way is position of starter... If it's down by the oil pan rail then you have a 250, the 170 & 200 mount higher approx midway on side of engine... There are other differences but I'm not totally familiar with the 6cyl...
so if i want to install a v8 do i just change bell housings?is there any numbers on the motor that i can decode?
The bell for a 250 is same as 302, the smaller six are different(at least part of the reason the starter is higher)...
Count the water pump bolts. 250 has 4 bolts and 170-200 used 3 bolts. 1980-83 200's have a low mount starter.
