Well, I am replacing the rear wheel cylinders on my 72' (250), and I bought one wheel cylinder from AutoZone and another from Advanced, they look the same size, but when I removed the original, I noticed that it is smaller than the new ones, and they won't fit into the backing plate's hole. I specified it was a 1972, with 250 . . .

Anyone have problems before getting the right wheel cylinder before? By chance anyone save their receipt, from a chain parts store, that you could look up and post their part # for me?

    Signed,
    Discouraged!:(

Bring the original with you ... maybe they gave you fronts instead of backs?

I crawled under my 74' and it looks like it is the same cylinder as what they gave me, the brake line goes in the cylinder at an angle vs. being straight like the 72'. I then crawled under one my 70's and it looks like the one on the 72' where as the brake line feeds in straight vs. at an angle.

I am guessing the 5 lug vs. the 4 lug is different and they are listing the 72' 250 (4 lug) as the same part number as the later model year 5 lug 250 models.

The sad thing is these parts stores don't stock this stuff, where you can take your part in and compare them, you have to order them from the warehouse.

    Follow Up

Well I looked up the inside bore from the factory manual and called the parts guy back, and he said it was the same, as what I had. So, I had him look up a 1970, and it has a different part #, and they are interchangable for BOTH sides. Sounds like the one I need, since it is an interchangable part # for both sides then, the fitting must be straight and not angled. (y)

I will let you guys know what I found out once, I get it. I had done a search earlier and I am surprised nobody else has run into this problem before. Maybe I should have gone to Napa. :D

Another Update . . . I should have gone to NAPA first!

A lesson learned, goto the right part store!

I had gone to Auto Zone, then to Advanced Auto, and got the same results after taking the time to have them order the wheel cylinders in. They both gave me the wrong parts for my Maverick. :smash:

I took the advice of a few mechanics and went to NAPA, and they ordered in the correct parts for me, without needing to look at my original. (y)

The mechanics that I talked to said that you may pay more at NAPA, but at least you will get the closest replacement part to OEM standards etc., and you will walk a way satisfied. And after this experience, I have to agree with them. It seems they still have the old reference books on hand, and don't count on the computer as much as the others either.

Just my .02 on the matter.

According to my interchange manual '71 6-cyl except 250 cid use a D5DZ2261A, 250 and 302's use D2DZ2261-2A. Sounds like 7 3/4" vs. 8" rear. For '74 they list a third part number.
