its been a long while since i posted anything on here. let me catch you up. transmission went out on my 72 4 door. was having to drive my girlfriends celica. but anyways.. got enough money saved up to order a trans from autozone. got it ordered.. they sent the wrong one. then they didnt order the right one for two more weeks. in addition to this. they told me "yeah it comes with a bellhousing torque converter.. shift lever.. etc.. etc..." i couldnt wait to send mine in cause i didnt have the 250 core fee. ya gotta remember im on an extreme tight budget. still driving the celica. so after two months they got the trans in but no bellhousing... hrmmm..still driving the celica.... and i havent heard a word from anyone for two months. so i got the regional manager involved.. funny how three days later i got the trans and bellhousing. but in the meantime i have been promoted to manager of a oil change shop that i work for. so im trying to get all this done and work 65 hours a week getting things done at work. still driving the celica. so anyways on thanksgiving day i finally get to work on it.. while everyone else is in the house eating dinner laughing getting drunk... i am working on my mav.. i got the trans in.. the lines hooked up...(with some modifications.) all good to go. made a modified shift lever. she tooka min but she fired up. was shifting thru the gears geting the level right. and the one trans fitting i didnt modify started spraying fluid... i shut her down for the day... still driving the celica. three days later i have the time to get a fitting to make work. put it in.. got the level right.. and SHE LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!:bananaman :bananaman :bananaman :bananaman :bananaman does anyone know how to make the heater work???? i think i need to bypass the switch. only driving the celica on really cold days now....
Congrats on getting the trans fixed. As for the heater, do you mean that the fan is not working? Did you check the fuse for the blower motor? In any case you should still be able to get heat if you put the selector to "warm" and open the vents, assuming your heater core is hooked up and not leaking. Fresh air will come in from the cowl, pass over the hearter core and come into the car as long as you are moving. The fan just helps it along, especially when parked. Sam
just curious what autozone charged for a tranny. i assume it was a c-4. my tranny builder charges between $200 and $250 to rebuild one. glad you got it back on the road again.
the heater? cant figure it out .. well.. havent had the time yet i should say... no leaks... everything hooked up correctly... blower works... no heat. only warm air is after engine is hot and i am moving down the road.. any ideas anyone??? i dont know where to start.. p.s. the trans was 400 with 250 core. no core charge if ya trade in when ya order.everywhere i called here in ga was 800 to rebuild i figured easier to swap myself. didnt know how to rebuild myself tho.
800.00 ! Seems a bit high to me, 400 for an exchange is not real bad but the wait sucks. Just did one for a race car, modified the internals and added a clutch to one drum, only needed one hard part, a new intermediate band. It already had a shift kit in the valve body so it was an easy rebuild for me. Took about twelve hours total, cleaning and building etc. 134.00 in parts, including an "H" servo from my stock. 50.00 labor. Just a sideline hobby for me but the 800 is gouging somebody IMO. The shop has to pay it's exspenses for equipt and such, maybe the price of a jar of vaseline has gone up, think?
Forgot to ask if you put in a new converter, if not most places will void any warranty on the rebuild. Stock ones are cheap insurance that no trash from using a used one that has not been flushed etc., will get in the fresh tranny.
$50 for 12 hours of labor ... Wow ... I guess you are just doing it as a sideline hobby! FYI .... when I was up in NY for the holidays I was reading the NY Post. There were shops in New York City that had Rebuilt Automatic Transmissions for $149 ... for $349 they included the tranny and installation was well ... heck of a deal.
Shops around here want at least $750 to rebuild a c-4! That does not include T/C or R/R.I been quoted as high as $1200!!! Over the counter trans can be from 350 to 650.Of course they want more for a C-4 than a T-350.I guess labor charges vary a lot from state to state. Can get a B/M or TCI for @ $800 w/out T/Q. I used to buy rebuilt trans for @200 a few years ago.Maybe I need to take a road trip out west to get a deal on a trans.
good thing i did all the work myself. took all i had jsut to do that. but yeah.. it came with a new torque converter. bout all it came with tho.. good news is i just got back from my brothers house which is bout an hour away.. she drove jsut fine.. once warmed up... still puzzling over the heater tho. all i get is the residual heat from the engine and notmuch of that. still cool air.
on the heat...check and see if the door is opening when you slide the lever. is the cable hooked up? there is a small pin the eye of the cable hooks to and it will slip off when the cable starts sticking. might want to lub. the cables anyway...frank...
thanx for the tip.. i did check the cable already tho.. works jsut fine.. not slipped off.. didnt know there was a door. will have to check that out. was curious if it might not be the selector switch thats choosed ac heat defog etc...
it could be the "slector switch". on an air car i think it is a vac. switch with a bunch of vac. lines running to and from it. one of the lines could be bad or off...frank...
