What is the correct way to install PS pump pulley?

I am sure if I just pound it on, I will mess something up...

 

They make a tool you can borrow at Advance or autozone to press on the pulley. See and jump to around 1:45 mark or watch the whole clip

So I made my own with what I have in the garage.

All thread carriage bolt, two washers, and a nut. Don't even need a vise!

 

I hope the pulley is not backwards. They usually have a lip on the cone tip for pulling off.

 

Yeah, this one has no lip. It is from March, for what it is worth.

I have it mounted but don't have the correct belt yet, and if I take the old belt and wrap it around everything, it seems like cone out will be ok.

 

So how does the pulley get pulled off?..

 

I don't know, but there are three small holes in it, which I assume you can mount bolts/screws into and pull it off.

I also have pulley and gear pullers, 3 and 4 armed doohickies with a large screw in the middle.

Hmm.. I never ran across one like that. .. And the bolt heads have clearance behind the pulley? I assume so..

Yes, my wife has three of them in the kitchen, as well, but still, kinda "specialized"

 

She uses them to pull the pits out of avocados.

I figured there is one that takes advantage of the three little holes in the face of the pulley.

 

The Ford power steering puller/installer kit (there are many generic branded ones) have a large nut with a flange, a forcing screw and collar that goes around the step that Gene was talking about to remove it. The kit uses some of the same components to install it similar to your all thread and nut set up but with the advantage of a bearing. If you pound it on, you will need a new pump as you surely will blow the shaft through the back of it. If you install the pulley and it has no provision for removal, well let's just say I hope you don't need to get it back off.
