Scissor jack ? Do I need the scissor jack with the slot that slips over the pinch weld ? Or will a scissor jack from a mustang supply house with a flat top that go's on the sub frame work ?
I use a floor jack at home too... I need something for when I'm on the road.... I guess I could through my alum. floor jack in a gym bag and carry it with me....
I carry a sissor jack and a pair of wheel chocks from HF. I wud be afraid a bottle jack wud be more unstable than sissor, plus might punch a hole thru a 40 yr old chassis. With either I wud use the wheel chocks; the ones I have fold so not much space needed to store them.
I bought a small floor jack, for like 20 bucks, and it fits in a tool bag.http://www.harborfreight.com/automotive-motorcycle/floor-jacks/2-ton-compact-trolley-jack-68783.html
I keep a hydraulic scissor jack like this in my car. Just a little bit bigger then a regular scissor jack, but much better built and more stable then the shaky little factory ones. I would never jack a car of any type up by the pinch weld, I don't understand why that's such a commonly acceptable practice.. it almost always does damage. On a Maverick, jack it up on the inboard flat part of the front or rear torque box where the frame rail is sandwiched.
All good Ideas... My alum race jack is light and the handle breaks down in two pieces. It will take up a lot of room tho... So I'm going to look for a jack like Jamie posted or the smallest floor jack in a case I can find... Thanks..
I have my...Hagerty Ins...card folded up in my wallet, doesn't take up any room at all from the trunk...
I had two of these and both of them leaked all the oil out behind the seat in my truck! I bought them brand new from Walmart and never opened the box. I'm guessing the temperature change may have had something to do with it, but the end result was a useless jack when I needed it! I bought a good Scissor jack from the junkyard! It came out of a U-Haul box truck. It has a good wide base and a flat top with ΒΌ" ridges around the edge. I believe it is a 5 ton rating. It will extend to 20" too!
I have a fairly large scissor jack from a mid 90's Tbird, I think. It has a larger base than the Maverick one and is longer, folds flatter when compressed and fits under the spare when collapsed. I'm with the other guys on jacking location. I lift from the torque box on the front and the frame rail on the rear.
