wouldn't a 68 block bored 30 over with fat top pistons same heads but a good three angle valve job roller rockers (which are relatively cheep now) a good mid range cam and 600 holly(my choice lol) a set of headers put that in or over three hundred horse?
I dont have a clue as to what horse power IM making but my motor is an old 302 thats been bored 40 over and has flat top pistons with a stage 3 extreme energy comp cam and some headman headers along with an aluminum 4 brl intake and edelbrock 650 carb (too much carb) my car is loads of fun to get on. itll spin the 60 series 15's all day long. when doing maybe 10mph and I jump on it tires start to spin and tries to go sideways
I was just going by the amount he had already mentioned on spending for the kit linked earlier in the thread. In that case.. cast stroker cranks don't really cost much more than stock stroke cranks. And for that matter.. there are some even bigger bargain cranks out there that almost approach the same cost as just turning/polishing an existing stock crank(I've seen them clearanc priced at 125 bucks). Which now basically means that the stock stuff is almost quite literally disposable once it's worn out.
with a decent enough cam(225-230 @.050 duration), careful parts selection, an extra bit of milling, and proper tuning.. yes. Cleaning up those restrictive exhaust ports with a grinder won't hurt the cause one little bit either.
we got into my 68 block it hasn't ran in 30 years but it'll still will turn with one hand. I'm paying $1200 to clean and do what ever work I need done to the block then one of my car friends and I are goanna start putting parts together. but I could go more than 350hp easy but I would have to rebuild the c4 right
yeah.. a healthy motor will eat up an old C4 pretty easily if you abuse it. And "slight abuse" would probably already be a foregone conclusion if you're power hungry in the first place. lol From a parts standpoint.. they don't really cost that much to go through and freshen up.. but you just need someone who knows transmissions to do it, is all.
around here, that's a lot of money(to clean and do what ever work needed done to the block)...does that include the parts to rebuild the engine also? you can get a long block (assembled w/heads) for that...
then you may want to consider buying one form a mail order shop that specializes in them. The extra couple hundred dollars in freight charges can be chalked up as cheap insurance if you buy from a reputable shop.. and is also slightly offset by the local taxes you'll be paying to have the work done anyways.
have a machine shop clean everything up and bore if necessary and you can install all of the parts your self. maybe have them install the internals. I think my shop is charging me like $150 to assemble the bottom end of my 347. install crank and bearings and hang pistons the rest is basically gaskets. if you have a good torque wrench and a socket set the rest is easy. the heads are easy to install and if theyre flat and in good shape you almost cant mess that up and if your intake is in good shape thats a snap to put on. everything is easy it just takes time to do it right.
