Yes - I've removed the 4 bolts from the bearing retainer plate to the rear-end. '72 Mav with an 8" diff. Replacing axle bearings. The passenger side axle came right out. Driver side is stuck. I've tried the BFH, reversing the brake drum, come-along, and the chain techniques with no success. Any other ideas? Else I'm off to AutoZone after work to borrow their slide hammer. Thanks -Craig
yep that's exactly it..when i had an 8" the bearing was just effed and i borrowed a massive slide hammer to do it..hitting it with a block/BFH didn't work at all.
thats a sure sign that the housing is bent. i would recommend finding a chassis shop that can straighten it for you.
It is Out !! Borrowed a big slide hammer, and about a dozen hits later: Success!! Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
I beg to differ, age will stick them very tight. I had one in a Torino with very low miles and the car had been pampered. I was doing a gear swap and that bearing was stuck like nobodies business. Once out you could see plenty of built up scale/rust in the bore.
the true test is will the axle slide back in with a new bearing and the housing end cleaned up. i find more times than not the housing is bent when you have to resort to the slide hammer.
