    Hello,

Does anyone know how to take apart an original Comt fuel cap. I need to clean under the plastic that is covering the emblem.

    Thanks!

Are you asking about the deluxe style cap? They do not come apart. The logo /emblem, and the clear plastic are molded into one piece when they are made. If they have started to delaminate from each other there is really nothing you can do.

Attached are a front and back picture of the cap I have. I don't know whether this is deluxe or not.

You can actually take it apart. It is a pain in the butt. You need to grind off the heads of the press in rivets that hold the rear plate on. Then the plate and center plastic section can be removed. Once removed, you need to pull/drill out the remainder of the rivets and tap the holes for small bolts when you put it back together. It is a nightmare and I ran out of patience.

There is nothing really to "clean" because as Eric said, the "emblem" is molded plastic and painted (from the rear side). Emblem Magic sells new center sections, but the wait can be up to a year and they cost $200. http://emblemagic.com/mercury.htm

I have taken them apart, and yes it is a pain especially drilling out the rivets but as Eric stated there is no cleaning it.

I took a Maverick deluxe cap apart and scraped all the paint of off the steerhead and painted it blue to match my car once, looks okay but took many hours of tedious work.

This is the cap I was thinking about from your original post - the deluxe cap which is made of cast pot metal - like the others have said - you can get the lens actually out of the cap by grinding off the rivet heads but once you have it out you will see the lens part is all one piece.

That cap you posted is a bit different in design being stamped steel and not cast pot metal. You could try to get it apart and see if that lens is made differently.

    Continued:

To take your cap apart you will need to use like a dremel tool or pencil grinder and remove these 3 rivet heads.
