I ran into my first problem early on in this project. I wanted to run the McLeod Soft-Lok clutch. It consist of an aluminum flywheel with steel insert, long style pressure plate and sintered iron disk. I called McLeod and told them what combination I was running. He knew of the bellhousing. A standard 164 tooth ring gear might not fit owing to diameter too large. A 157 tooth would be too small. The bellhousing was really designed for a SBC. So, we decided to place a SBC ring gear on a SBF flywheel. Sounded great. After I got the clutch assembly I needed a block plate. There was not a block plate to be purchased for my combination. I tried the several versions offered by lakewood and none worked. I ended up deciding to make my own and bought a peice of 6061-t6 .125 aluminum and spent the day cutting and drilling. It worked out well, see picture. I wanted to run the CSI starter because they pay contingency money, the only starter that pays. They offer 2 mounting blocks but neither worked. The pinion was riding on the ring gear of the flywheel. I called CSI and told them my dilemma and they were unimpressed and offered no help. The starter needed to be moved about 7/16" towards the front. I ended up getting another mounting block and having one end milled down to make a spacer. It works well. I then had to match that to the block plate to make sure the starter doesn't move around. More later, Ashton
that's great that you can do it and i wish you the best, but from what i've seen of racecars they are always looking for parts. question i have is if they fail at a race are you going to have spares? not like you can run to the local parts store, can you.
Wow. Do you have your own machine shop? Is the house next door for sale? Relocation could be in my future.
Replacements Those 2 items should not have to be replaced. If it were a wearable part I would have replacements on hand. Thanks for the question. Ashton
racelolo....glad you found the board.......this is John........ folks we might have another maverick "racer"...wooo wooooo!
Race lolo Hey John, thats my sister. She knows the car as well as I do. She has the other car in the Hudson family drag racing tree. Before my dad bought the Maverick he raced a Falcon Ranchero. It had the inline 6 with four speed. He sold the car in 1972-73. My sister and her husband found the car in the 90's. It had been sitting in a barn for ages. They restored the car and built another inline six with an automatic in it for bracket racing. She drives the car, it runs 11.40 in the quarter.
I remember you showing/telling about it....real cool car. just goes to show you can make the 6 bangers run....if you want.
