So Im trying to drive my parts car because why not! but anyways, i found the key under the floor mat, stuck a battery in there, gave it some gas and it runs amazing with ZERO smoke..only problem is, I turn the key to the 'start' postion and it fires right up! BUT, if i let the key go all the way back to the 'run' position, it kills it!!

...Its tough holding it between the 'run' & 'start' position..not to mention it doesn't allow you to take it out of gear...

Probably need to adjust the position of the switch on the column. There's a procedure on here somewhere.

I had the same problem with my Falcon. Replaced the starter solenoid and everybody lived happy ever after.

Say what? The solenoid only supplies current to operate the starter, has zero to do with keeping the engine running...

I agree the iginition sw likely need adj, it's on top of the column just under the dash...

Agree - you have no problem sending power to the solenoid to start the car but once you go back to "run" you have no power to the ignition system to keep the car running :)

This is not the case, when the ignition switch is in the start position it does not supply the coil with power (9 volts), it gets that power from the solenoid (12 volts) to start the engine. When the key is released the ignition switch takes over and sends power to the coil.
You probably need a new ignition switch or if it has been sitting a long time try disconnecting the battery and cycling the switch several times to try and clean off the contacts. But probably needs a new one.

Then why did tapping the solenoid with a screwdriver handle kill the engine? Doesn't one of the small wires from the solenoid go the fuse box that sends electricity to the ignition switch and the other small wire goes to the ignition coil?

I think it's the other way around.

The small red/blue wire activates the solenoid by sending voltage only when ign is in start position, the small brown jumps out the resistor so the coil gets full voltage while cranking(as I was reminded)...

It's possible to connect the brown wire to the battery and run the engine without the ign on...
