First of all I have to admit that I am a Mustang guy and drive a 67 Fastback. The Maverick belonged to my father who bought it about 12 years ago. For the past 2 years the car was sitting in my Uncle's garage while my father was out of the country. Recently my father returned to the US and decided he needed to do something with the car as he has 4 other cars and my uncle was tired of acting as a storage facility. Enter my wife, who has always liked the car and pursuaded me to ask dad if he would consider giving the car to her . Needless to say he was overjoyed at the prospect of unloading the vehicle, yet still keeping it in the family. The car is a 1973 Maverick 4dr, gold exterior w/ a white vinyl top, tan interior, with factory air (not working). My father tells me that the car is one of the "luxury" models. The vehicle has a bit of rust at the bottom of the doors, and in the hood and trunk lid from sitting inside of a non-tempeture controled garage for the past several years, but is otherwise in good shape. The 250 cu 6 is in great shape. Just wondering if you guys can give me any info on how easy (or hard) parts are to obtain for this car. I take it they are not as easy to find as the mustang parts, but I would also guess that some of the parts are interchangeable with the mustangs. I would also like to know if any of you guys own 4 door mavericks or can tell me more about them. Like I said this car is for my wife and I really want to do it up right.
Welcome to the board. Sounds like you have a LDO (Luxury Decor Option)Most of the Mustang stuff will work on the front suspension. Not much is available as far as sheet metal goes. There a quite a few 4 doors on the board. We also like pictures on the board, and also let us know where your located you never know someone here might just be in your backyard. This is the best site onthe web for Maverick and Comet information exchange. More info than you will ever need and lots of folks willing to help you along the way with you project. again welcome. Russ
sorry, I'll go back and edit my profile. I'm in New Orleans La. and the car is a Texas car (as far as I know) that was from Lubbock. The car has been in Houston Tx for the past 20 years and until my father went out of the country it was stored in his temputure controlled garage. Sadly the rust problem seems to be the result of storage for the past 2 years in my uncle's garage. I have to shoot a few pictures for the insurance company so I'll try to post the picks in a few days. It kind of sucks that nobody manufactures the sheet metal as the doors, hood and trunk are the only places I have rust ( believe it or not there is not even any in the battery box). I was simply planning on buying new doors, a new hood and a new trunk lid and swapping them out. Oh well it looks like I have a few scavenger hunting trips to the junkyards in my future.
Welcome aboard and good luck with the car. Many of us can help you with getting the parts you need when you are ready. Aside from all the tech advice you might need, we all help each other when we are in need of something. The only body parts that are still available aftermarket right now are rocker panels and rear quarters. The quarters are for 2 doors but can be cut to fit with a bit of patience. If the rust isn't too badly advanced, repair might be a viable option for you. As to interchange, the only car that has a number of interchangeable parts, largely suspension, is the early Granada/Monarch. Little from other Fords, outside of powertrain parts, will directly fit. Hopefully, you'll consider joining Maverick/Comet Club International as we'd love to have you a member. Our big yearly meet will be in Kentucky in '05 and it should be a great time. You'll be in good company as many of us have other collector cars other than Mavericks/Comets along with our Mavs, but our Mavs are generally our first loves. Contact Craig Selvey here through the board for an application and club info. Regardless, if you need us, we're here!!
Welcome and congrats on the 73 Maverick in your garage One thing that is extremely helpful here, is the great job that the webmaster, Stefan, has done with archiving old posts. As you develop questions, do a search before posting. You will be amazed at the amount of stored info on these cars that is available to you! but as always, if you can't find an answer, post away. There are many great people here to help!
It's great to have another 4 door in Louisiana. I just finished or I should say I got to a point were I can stop for a while on my 4 door. I got mine from my mom after she passed away. My wife thinks I'm crazy to put that much money in a Maverick 13k, when I could have bought a new car for that. Then I tell her that if I had put that much in a new car in 5 years I would be buying another one. Anyway welcome to the board, let us know if we can help out. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=4111
welcome aboard dude! i am another proud owner of a 4door. you'll see that just about anything is available for your car. just ask here and sooner or later, you'll find what you need. just gonna need to plan a road trip or two for the bigger items unless shipping costs don't scare you. greyhound is a good place for cheap shipping of big heavy stuff. scott
Good to have ya onboard...just ask if ya need help...Doug Bauer is your state rep...he has his own private Mav/Comet museum He can definitely point ya in the right direction for parts. Ooops sorry...Doug is the rep for Texas...don't know who the rep is for Bayou country.
