I KNOW you wont have any problems as long as you stay with the same weight its ok to put any one you want on there its just a stock replacement. I believe you will run into problems if you go with a heavier balancer

X 2 unless he just wants to spend more money for nothing gained. A heavier balancer will not negatively affect anything (in regards to junrai's post) A heavier imbalance balancer will. (switching from a 28 to a 50 oz/in)

Make sure the replacement you get has the same thickness, in regards to where your belt pulley mounts. Otherwise it will no longer line up with your water pump or accesssories. I was reminded of this one the hard way recently .........

well it dont quite line up exactly as it is right now, thats why i wanted to go a little thicker so it would be perfect.

They make pulley spacers for that.

What is the casting number on the old balancer? Most 289 balancers are thin compared to an early 302 crank dampener or balancer.

if your not balancing your engine and upgrading your internals, just stick with a stock style, no real gain for a stock engine.

The pulley offset of the 289 (3 bolt) vs the 302 (4 bolt) is different. Then there's the timing mark location variance (drivers side water pump vs passenger side waterpump inlet)

so then the thin stock one would be the safest way to go?

Might be less head ache to send your ballancer off to Damper Doctor and have them repair yours. This way you know it will fit your setup.
