Won't go into gear after valve body swap?

This is a wide ratio c4 tranny with the "pinto" style valve body. I didn't like the 2-3 flare, so I installed my old standard style valve body because it has a shift kit and anti flare kit installed.

Bolted it all back up (yes I lined up the internal shift rod with the "plunger" and topped off the fluid).

Ran it through all the gears...but no effect. It just stays in neutral and won't engage.

Not sure what to try next. I'm wondering if the old VB is some-how shot?

    Thanks.

I wouldn't think so...a valve may be stuck in it...:yup:

Hmm, looks like it will have to come back out.

Was hoping it was something I overlooked.

    Bill,

The standard valve body has 8 bolt holes and the "pinto" valve body has 9 so I had one extra bolt when I put the standard VB in.

I've been calling the issue a "flare", but now I'm wondering if it is overlap.

What is happening is it seems to stall in second and refuse to upshift (this is in auto mode). Is that flare or overlap?

Flare is like a neutral between 2nd and 3rd. So between the 2nd gear and 3rd gear shift, it has a second or so where the engine rpms can race up before the 3rd gear engages.

It feels like the clutch sticks open going into 3rd, and then slowly releases engaging 3rd gear.

Hmm, with the lazy sensation/not wanting to upshift under hard acceleration....maybe that's OL?

I ripped off the modified VB and pulled out PaulS's antiflare kit and transferred it to the "pinto" VB.

I don't know if I should just try it now...or order up a Transgo 40-2 and throw that at it as well.

OK, I've got most of the kit installed, but have reached an impasse.

I can't get the pressure regulator valve out. I removed the "L" shaped retaining pin, but it still won't budge.

I'm afraid to pry too much...don't want to gouge up the soft aluminum.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks.

Hmm, I've got a compressor, but wouldn't know how to pressurize the vb to pull that off.

Finally got it out by working it back and forth (mini ball peen to pound in and gentle prying back out)....then the spring pressure made it pop out.

Victory didn't last long though. After changing springs...now it won't go back in all the way. It seems to be hitting bottom with a 1/16" still sticking out. Can't get the "L" locking pin in until it's fully seated.

Might try a c-clamp on it. Gotta go easy though, don't want to destroy the casting.

I can't believe how much of a struggle this has been.

if you press it in with a C-clamp, will it function like it should...

I can't figure out why it won't find bottom. The bore looks fine when I take all the guts out...
