I thought this would be the best section of the forum to ask.

I have a 1974 302 Maverick engine in a 1963 Falcon ,the engine does not have a tag on it but I have the stamped numbers on the side of the block..I would like to get a replacement ID tag for the engine.I know I can have the tag made at Marty's auto works, but I need some help understanding how to read the tags.I would really appreciate if some one who knows and understands these tag numbers, can lead me in the correct direction on how the numbers on the tag of my engine needs to be stamped. :)

I have info on tags through 1969 but nothing in the '70s... Tags were updated by date and level change of the engine, meaning if there were a change that required a different component(say dipstick & tube), the tag info was revised... Looking at the casting date would give you a idea of when the engine is built, actual date should be stamped into the block... At that point it'd probably be best to look at another '74 tag and duplicate the remaining info...

the casting # on the block is D4DE - 6015 - 8A and then it looks like it may have SES

If I new what a 1974 302 tag looked like I think I woudl do what you said and have a tag duplicated with may block casting numbers on it. Do you think that would close enough ?

Before 2/1/73 Ford used a metal tag...After 2/1/73 they went to a label (decal)

The sticker is on the passenger valve cover, facing forward. You can see it hiding behind the dipstick.
