It is a roller motor. Roller cam. So it could be an HO.

Find the casting numbers on the block and/or heads. That will help out a bit to determine the year model.

4x4 trucks also use dual sump oil pans it does look like a ho motor if it only turns half way then it must of a little rust catching the rings

I thought the short block 302 and 302HO were the same. The difference, I thought was in the heads, intake, etc. If it's '87+ then it should have the E7TE heads and the 351W firing order.

Pistons may have been different too, but not sure.

That looks like a truck short block because of the piston(truck motors have smaller cams and cast pistons with no valve reliefs)..... All Mustang roller 5.0's have forged or hyperutetic pistons with valve reliefs except for 86 which has a completely flat top piston with no valve reliefs.....

Even truck engines had E7TE heads, so you can't go by that.

Block numbers are cast into the block above where the starter would mount.1996 truck blocks were roller too,and pistons do look like truck pistons.

EVERY passenger car 5.0 is roller beginning '86 & that includes the Lo-Po used in the '86-'91 Crown Vic/Grand Marquis, as well as '86-'90 Town Car & '86-'88 T-Bird/Cougar... None of these engines had valve reliefs in the pistons because of the sunken valve E6 heads... HO were used in Stang, '91-'93 T-Bird/Cougar and '86-'92 Mark VII LSC... Earlier models of the std MK VII had std 5.0, around '89 all were HO...

Trucks used a E5 or E7 head and AFAIK all had valve reliefs in the pistons, none were roller till '92...

BTW the engine in question is probably one of the Lo Po 5.0, as those had dished pistons without valve reliefs...

Not that I want to do this but, most of the truck 5.0s were still not roller until about halfway through 93. I read that same thing all over the damn place, bought a 93 Bronco with a 5.0, then found out if I had wanted roller I should have bought a 94.

I bought a 93 E150, and it had a roller, and I bought it just for the transmission....

Build it! Nothing wrong with dished pistons. So you get 9:1 instead of 9.5:1. It will still make a nice motor, and just BEGGING for boost!

I don't think it's the 86 mustang HO because I although I agree those were the only year
With no valve reliefs I believe the were flat tops and not dished. It's definitely a factory roller cam motor though which should be a good starting point for a build. Get some flat tops with valve reliefs so you can put some cam in it and gain a little compression.
