Need to know what is this box for? Can I get rid of it? I need some more engine room.

That rectangular box would be your voltage regulator. It is required for your externally regulated stock type alternator. Look into a 3G conversion to ditch it.

3g upgrade will be one of the best thing you do to your car..plus it will get rid of a bunch of ugly wiring...no more dimming lights when you hit the brakes or anything...plus then you can install a more efficent electric fan, bigger stereo/amp..all that good stuff if you want to.

Thanks. Next question, my alternator is an aftermarket 1 wire. The 1 wire hooks to the positive post on the battery. So do I still need this box. I guess its not hook up since I changed the alternator.

if it's working, you don't need the box...:Handshake
the other one goes to the starter...if you wire the starter GM style you can do away with it...:tiphat:

Next question. In the fire wall is a grommet with what appear to be a wire and two vacuum hose. Can I get rid of those too? The are not hooked to anything now that I got the new motor in. I got hoses and wire everywhere and trying to clean up the bay.

I believe they are for factory air, the vacuum hoses go to a heater hose shut off valve and the wire is to engage the clutch on the compressor. Should be 2 small hoses for the valev and a larger hose for the vacuum canister.
