Anyone cut out the stock sheet metal front structure and built a custom front subframe? I've seen hybrids of sorts that retains the front rails. Curious if anyone has replaced everything.
My original plan was to build a complete front to back full frame under the Maverick. Plan B was to replace everything from the firewall forward. I decided on Plan C which is what I built. My firewall forward plan was going to be based on a Martz Chassis product. I've attached the web site link if you want to take a look - just look up the independent front suspension for the early Mustang http://www.martzchassis.net/
Just a question...................why would you want to cut the rails and put build new ones? Are you going to put a straight axle in the Maverick?
Previous damage mainly in the left rail. Mustang II suspension planned for the car. Plus I have been unable to find a donar car to rob the front clip.
When I restored my last Mustang GT..........which had much the same type of damage....................I actually thought about redoing the front subframe like the 67/69 Camaro's............Where the front subframe just unbolts, which would allow a number of different types of front suspension to be used. Just another thought when and if I change mine to Mustang II or III.
That's what I'm talking about. First thought when discovered how bad our rails are was 2x4 rails. How are they tied into the torque boxes? Also, did you set the k member at stock ride height?
There are lots of pictures on the build thread that shows how I set up the k-member. It is actually for a 65-6 Mustang so the alignment to the maverick rails was off. I didn't want to mess with the geometry that Cortex Racing built into the k-member so I scratch built the rails to match it. And then rather than grafting the new rails to the torque boxes I decided to do a perimeter chassis kind of my spin of a Morrison or Roadster Shop frame at a fraction of the cost. I suppose I could have plated the end of the new rails and the torque boxes and made this a bolt on unit but this is a no holds barred build and thought a full chassis would perform the best.
