My 4 speed Hurst shifter is locked into third gear, any suggestions on what I can do and/or how to remedy the problem? Is there a way to adjust it so it won't lock up? it is stuck pretty good right now, I have tried to shift it with engine running and not running and it won't budge either way, yes clutch is disengaging all the way, anybody know? You will probably have to crawl under the car and manually shift the linkage using a wrench to turn the shifter arms so they line up in a up or down position, then there is a hole that you can stick a 1/4" allen wrench through and adjust linkage until it is in alignment. I am sure that somebody will chime in and be a little more specific about procedure but it is not hard to do.
I am assuming you have a new shifter.....................????? When you shift from 1st to 2nd and then back to neutral can you slide the alignment tool in without any trouble, and if you shift from 2nd to 3rd and then back to neutral can you slide the tool in without any trouble. Do you have the wave washers on each rod at the transmission? As was suggested by Yellow75, get it back to neutral and then make sure you can get the alignment tool in without any binding. Also, did you adjust the stops in 2nd and 4th.
Not a new shifter but it is the same one that summit has pictured, I just used it for reference, right now it is locked up tight, I am going to disconnect the linkage tomorrow and align everything with the tranny in neutral and then adjust the linkage to the holes, there are bushings on the linkage connection points, but I don't know what a "wave washer" is.
Shades of 1972 when 4 spd. shifters would lock up while out on a date and you'd have to crawl under your car to try to jiggle your shifter rods free while "your" rod shrunk
More likely it hung between 1st and reverse. What you did was go slightly into reverse, then over into 1st. Go back all the way into reverse, then pull it back to neutral. Or get under it and remove the shifter rods, then put everything back into neutral. If you'll pay attention while doing this, you'll also notice which gears it was hung in. Once you figure that out, it'll virtually never happen again.
How are your nylon bushings and how badly are they worn. When you slide the shift rod into the bushing and then into the arm.....they should be tight, not sloppy, then you need to make sure when you put the spring clip on that there isn't a lot of slop in the rod.................if there is use a wave washer between the spring clip and arm..........................Hurst shifters are great when new but have issues when the bushings start to wear or if the rods are not ajusted correctly or the stops are not set up. My suggestion would be to put the trans in neutral manually from underneath the car.............take all of the rods off, put a 1/4" drill in the shifter to make sure it is in neutral................go underneath and attach the rods.....but if the bushings are worn I would replace them, then just follow the setup steps to get everthing aligned..................and you shouldn't have any more problems.
I was going to insert this into the above post but forgot. http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/instructions/huu-3737637.pdf
I did just as outlined in red above, and now it works great!!! shifts smooth as goat lips!! Thanks everyone for your help
It also helps to use the steel bushings instead of the nylon ones. The steel bushings never wear out.
