I have been playing with the idea of doing something similar to pics. I like the idea of a android device as a head unit but it would have to be subtle. Left knob would control volume and right knob would be for show. This seems to be to more subtle then putting in a modern radio. Any opinions?

Looks great, what I love about android is that it's open sourced and you can get app making software for free.

Making a radio app to look like a vintage radio would be neat.

yea Bry and I are talking about using an android tablet to control the radio, display the gauges through megasquirt and even try to control the A/C. should make for a really awesome project.

As for your project I know there are devices that you can get that plug into your droid device and then hooks up to the speakers or amp.

I think its a great idea! I already gutted my am and made it into a preamp for a MP3 Player or I would be doing this. I have been looking for a small MP3 to put in the car next to the radio. Now I think I will take my old andriod phone and use it.

I was not expecting much feedback but its good to know people have similar mindsets. I am trying to determine what device to use, it needs to be small and have a fm tuner (this is the hard part).

    Those are pretty cool ideas.

I know i use mine hooked up to my radio. Between my personal mp3s, Pandora, and Internet Radio (for my heavy metal KNAC fix!!!) I use my android for most of my musical needs. .I use mine hooked up by the headphone wire, but from now on I will be buying bluetooth compatible head units.

I know a guy that mounted an Android tablet in his dash....but his is wi-fi only. He can only use maps in the McDonalds drive thru. :biglaugh:

Other than that it's pretty sweet.

It's a gud idea cept for the fact it's kind of small and hard to see where the stock location of the radio resides. If it's only going to be used when the vechicle is at rest, no problem. But, playing w/ it in motion wud seem to be hazardous - like "Texting while driving". IMHO

I just had to watch a training video on the new Dodge radio that sends and receives texts. Funny you can buy a tablet for less than $400 but a fancy new car radio with all the buttons can cost you over $2500 over the counter. :bs:

I would tether it to my smart phone so anytime I am in the car it would have a connection.

This is a concern, trying to think of solutions.
