Hey! This is my first time posting on this forum so i am hoping i can get some help. I'm most likely just like the rest of you when it comes to Mavericks or Comets. I love em. And I really think it would be cool to get one as my first car. I'm only 16 but i really like the Maverick and like the idea of owning one. I was wondering if somebody on here could help me out on this. I found a 1974 4 door Ford Maverick on craigslist. The guy selling it wants 1200 dollars. Now, at first, i figured it was a red flag, since the price was low, but i wanted to get another opinion. I really like the idea of fixing the maverick and this is something i really want to do. Here's the link...
    http://dallas.craigslist.org/sdf/cto/3375156138.html

Now the guy says it needs a new ignition, a new battery, and the carburetor needs adjusted to get it running. Does anybody know how much trouble it would be to do all these things? If someone could please get back that would be great. Thanks!

All those things listed to get it running are easy as long as you or someone you know has some mechanical ability, or you're willing to learn. I would try to talk him down on the price, you can find running 4 doors for that much.

The car looks good but pics can be deceiving...Definitely beat him up on the price...It does not run...850.00 tops. Take a good look at the car and be certain you can do some of what it needs or, you will find yourself behind the eightball from the get go. Its creeping up on 40 years old and will need more than a battery/carb and some ignition work. Personally, if you really want one, keep searching. There out there in running driving condition for 12 to 1500.00. You may even find a 2 door at the right price. Good luck!!!
Oh!! welcome to the center of the Maverick /Comet universe!!!

If the cowl, torque boxes and floors are okay, it might be worth $800. If not, then run, and run hard! There's nothing wrong with having a 4-door for your first car. JMO

Get a bucket of water or a hose and run the water down the grates in front of the windshield. Check inside the front floor for water. These cars are notorious for rust issues in these areas. Even though the car is a Texas car, it doesn't take much to check it out.

Good luck, and don't rush into it without doing some detective work first!

Slow down, and don't just buy a car to buy one, make sure it's what you really want. When I was 16, the last thing I would have wanted was a 4 door.

The "Has been in my family since bought new" is a plus for past information on the car's life. It don't look bad at all. :)

Why is everybody dissing the 4-door? Yes, back in OUR day we would not be caught dead in a 4-door. But today, kids actually WANT a 4-door.

I think it looks like a good deal. Rebuilt trans, rebuilt motor, and from the pictures I can see it looks nice. As stated...you just need to look at it in person, and then figure out if you have the know-how to get it running again.

Craig, I have to disagree. People may tend to favor 4dr cars for daily drivers I doubt many people actually want a 4dr classic. Most of the guys at the cruise ins said they have a 4dr because they couldn't afford a 2dr.

The big benefit of the 4 door is the back seat. If you go 2 door, you gotta go bench. At 16, it's all about the "park" :coffee:

I agree with you when it comes to "classic" cars, but the original poster was looking for a daily driver as I recall. In that case....get the 4-door.

I see that now. Also I remember beating the hell out of my first car, I recommend a 4dr Comet.
