I have a 74 Merc. Comet. 250, Auto,A/C, Power steering, Manual brakes and need the Vac Diagrams as Mine was apart when I received it. Here's what I have. Two Vacuum points from Firewall, Block on Intake with 3, Block where lower heater hose attaches to block with 2, Thermostat housing with 3, EGR 1, Distributer with 2, Carb with 2 (may not be original carb and those are marked but since I know there are several T's in the vacuum lines still not sure. Heater valve on lower heater hose just outside firewall with 2. Can anyone help? even partial as long as you are sure it's correct will help. TIA Dave
How original do you want it? I put a non-EGR carb spacer plate on my 74 and now it has basically one vacuum line to the dizzy and one in and out of the firewall for the A/C and the hookup for the Transmission. Everything else went in the trash bin and there was quite a bit of it. I have the same setup as you ... Automatic, 250, A/C and Power Steering. It majorly cleans up the engine compartment and gets rid of the emmissions. I bought a brass plug at Ace Hardware and closed up the EGR port on the exhaust manifold. I have a spare non-EGR spacer if you want to do the same thing ... $25 shipped .... Dan
Dan, I assume Dizzy= Distirbuter, This is not a show car by any means. It will be my sons dailey driver for his first car. We are working on it together. I am totally lost when it comes to vacuum. I could totally rewire the car if you took all the eletrical out but I have a mental block against vacuum LOL. Could you draw me a diagram as to what you are talking about? as long as it doesn't hurt fuel milage It doesn't matter to me.
It's raining here now but I will go out and draw you a diagram of my simplfied setup when I get a chance .... Should have no effect on gas mileage .. I also converted to a Duraspark II distributor at the same time ...
Thank You Dan. My job is slow in the summer and I am almost never home starting in Sept. My sons 16th Birthday is Dec 12 so I really only have till end of july to finish the car. Starting August I have to start calling all my jobs and doing the paying work. If you saw the pics you know I have all the body work to do yet and paint. so when you can I'd appreciate it and If I go your route I will take your Non EGR spacer
Go with DM's suggestion. It will save you time in the long run. Did the same with my 74 302, and it cleans up under the hood really nice, and you never have to worry about a crossed or plugged line. One from carb to the distributor, one to the trans, and one into the dash for A/C and heater controls. Can you do all this with the EGR still installed, by just plugging it or something? I swapped my stock manifold for an Edel Performer w/o EGR, since I needed a new carb anyway, and wanted 4bbl. It felt really good taking off 25 lbs of junk from under the hood and throwing it into the trash bin.
Here's one I drew on a 76 with a 250. Maybe it will help. http://www.mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=10715
Thanks Mavaholic, I had seen that before. it kinda helps but think I will see what the diagram looks like with the non EGR spacer. also I have A/C and the heater control valve, but no smog pump and my Dist. has 2 Vacuum ports.
i know this is a REALLY old post, but could you tell me how to do the exact thing you just described? taking off all the vacuum except for the ones that are needed. I have the same set up and would love to get rid of all the hoses! Thanks, Ace
Essentially you have the vacuum line that goes to the distributor, it needs to be on the right port on the carburetor, the other line needs to go inside the car to the dashboard. The second vacuum line can be from almost any source. Aside from those two, and maybe a vacuum canister, all the rest can be capped, plugged, taped, whatever. I can't help with which on the port on the carb. It has been way too long since I worked on a 6.
