Well, as it is I have the following engine transmission combo I have built for another car I am building (64 Sunbeam Alpine) but have considered installing in the Maverick since it is already set up for a SBF / C4 combo. 347 stroker with Forged crank, Forged H beam rods, Forged 11:1 pistons, AFR 205cc race heads which have small 58cc combustion chambers, Comp Cam HE274HR camshaft with comp cams solid roller lifters and roller rockers, Wieand sigle plane aluminum intake with 750cfm Race Demon carb, Billet Girdle, windage tray and complete MSD ignition with 6AL box. Not too sure what the engine will produce as it has not been started yet. The transmission is a TCI Super Street Fighter C4 with 3000 rpm stall 10 inch converter. The headers which I got with the Maverick are 2" primary tubes with 3 inch collectors.
I can't imagine that much HP in a Sunbeam................had a few friends with Sunbeam Tigers with built 289's and they were a handfull and because of the very short wheel base really squirrely in the 1/4 mile..........ofcourse this was 40 years ago. Sounds like a good candiate for the Maverick, maybe low 11's or mid to high 10 car with the motor although I'm a believer in small rather than bigger when it comes to headers. My 408 uses 1-7/8 stepped headers and did 642hp @ 6800 with 544lbft @5700 on the dyno with minor tuning..................and most people told me the headers were just too small.
If I end up putting it in the Sunbeam I will have to use the headers which I fabricated for it to fit. I moverd the engine back to the point where the harmonic balancer is over the Mustang II crossmember. Make for a tighter area for your feet but since I will be using an automatic I do not have to worry about the third pedal. Those headers are 1 5/8" primaries and 3 inch collectors. I might try again fabricating another set to see if I can make some with at least 1 3/4" primaries. That engine will be choked with the small headers with the amount of air that engine combination will flow. What 1/4 mile times do you runwith the 408 in your Maverick? What is your shift rpm?
I would think the little 347 would do good with the 1.75 primaries. Will you put the motor on a dyno? The best I've done is 9.801 @ 133 with a 1.410 60' and 6.167 660'. That was on the old motor before I refreshened it and lower the compression and changed the cam. I am hoping for 9.5's or 9.6's and would love to get the 60' down to a 1.2..............did loosen up the converter and changed the merge collectors. We will see this next season.
If the 347 goes into the Maverick I will use the 2" primary headers which came with the car. As for the Sunbeam, it has been several years since I fabricated the headers and from what I recall the 1 5/8" barely had room. I guess I could go over the frame rails and cut the pipes back under the floors to the sidepipes. As for a dyno? I have heard that the closest one to me is about 2 1/2 hours away but I really have not researched too much on that. I am sure there must be one in Nashville, TN
Check these guys out they can answer any question you need. 460ford.com A stock headed 460 won't be turning any more than 5500 rpm so the stock crank will be perfectly fine.My old 460 spun 6500 for 10 years with absolutely no trouble.
Thanks for the link. That 74 maverick with a Dodge Viper V10 in it is sweet. Even though I hate to see brand mixing when using a Ford car, but I can see this being cool. Now, it is alright using other car brands, just not Ford's!
