Hi there People, I bought my self a 4 door maverick with a L6 engine. But now im converting the mav into a V8 (beast) im having trouble on the way and would like the help from other Ford lovers Im kind of new in the American measuring etc. My biggest trouble now is that i need to find a nice race transmission that fits with a Mercury 302 from year 72. I bought a C4 auto but the bolting was to small? Any tips and tricks to get the engine and transmission as good as possible would be very kind If you want to know anything about the car or me just ask
to the forum from Northeast Pennsylvania USA I know you will like it here, Jimmy I do remember there being a bolt pattern difference from the older 302's to the newer ones. Some had 5 bolts and some had 6 - you more than likely have the wrong transmission bolt pattern for your engine - maybe you could just change the front bell housing to match the engine pattern. I'm not that up on my 302 knowledge - I'm sure that others here will be able to help you more.
Welcome to the site! A 72 302 would have a six bolt bellhousing. Is it possible that yours has a 6cyl. bellhousing?
Many Thanks Wow! First of all i need to thank you all for the quick answers! Im not that good at the english typing/reading but im gonna process the answers and give you more info as soon as possible. And upload pictures of the car and my small garage here in the cold Sweden Thanks for this! really made my day! now i only have to scratch my head to translate the answers and not by thinking of the car
Welcome to the board. If you have a 200 cubic inch 6 cylinder the bellhousing will not fit a v8. If it is a 250 6cylinder than it should fit. Check out the bellhousings also because there is a small bell and a large bell. The small fits a 157 tooth flexplate and the large is a 164 tooth. There are different size torque convertors also. All of this has to match so be sure to check it all out before spending money and finding out you bought the wrong stuff.
Jimmy posted this photo on my Facebook today with the text "4 Bolt?". I thought I would post it here for him as it shows his engine block bolt pattern and maybe he will post a photo of his transmission housing so we can see why his C4 won't bolt to his 302. I see a 6 bolt pattern on the block but I don't have any experience with the large vs small housings that have been mentioned. Maybe this will help us to help Jimmy
From San Jose, CA. One thing to look for besides the 5 verus 6 bolts, and the flexplate is that most if not all V8 C4's had a 26 spline input shaft (1970 to 1981), and some of the 6 cylinders and early V8 C4's (1964-1/2 through 1969) had a 24 spline input shaft...................you want to find the C4's with the 26 spline. A couple of years ago I sold my 1931 Model A Coupe to a guy in Finland, and about 20 years ago I sold my 1968 Camaro Z28 to a guy in Stockholm.......................it's a small world.
No factory 302 ever had a 5 bolt bell, that's only pre '65 289, 260 & 221... The early '65 Stangs used a 5 bolt 289 but those are the ones referred to 64½ these days...
Almost looks like it's a C3 Bellhousing. The easiest way would be with a casting number.......................the big blended case C4's had 7 bolts and the small case had 6 bolts.....................I've never seen one with 8 bolts.
What ever trans it's for surely isn't a 5.0, with the tall narrow spacing of the top two bolts it appears to be for the 2.3 OHC 4cyl...
