Ok, I it my ego number for the MAV. I am now looking for a more streetable manifold. Thinking of an RPM Air Gap.. Anyone running one/ Will it flow to 6500 like they say/ Currently running weiand accelrator that flows to 7000. Would not mind shifting at 6500 for the rest of the motors life. Thoughts?... Also dropping the predator and going to 750 demon... Ideas? Scotty P
I have the RPM Airgap and it runs great on the street. Idles at 700 with no problem. Of course, your cam will have a great effect on streetability too.
Have you tried going from the Predator to a Holley for street service. That should help you plenty. Predator users that I have known all say the same thing... Predator sucks really bad for street driving. The only reason I say this is because you have a VERY mild single plane intake. I swapped from a mild single plane to an RPM because I was thinking just like you. I found the RPM turned to 6k rpms, but it was a dog, compared to the single plane, after 2500. Swap if you find a loner or cheap used intake, but I just about gaurantee that you will be disappointed with power production after seeing what the mild single planes do for an SBF. Dave
Wait a sec! I just noticed your 3000 stall and 4.11 gears. You WILL be SORELY disappointed with a dual plane intake if you do not change these parts! Why would you run an intake that makes it's best power below your stall? An intake that will DESTROY your streetable traction with 4.11s and lower all of your shift points? Dave
I have a RPM Performer intake with a Holley Street Avenger Carb (570cfm). Backed with a C-4 with shift kit & 2500 rpm stall converter & 3.55 gears. Car pulls hard on low end, I built it for torque. Still have the stock distributor with Pertronix ignition. Thinking about different heads, distributor & lower gears.
With 411 gears and 3000 stall I would agree with Ratio411 that the x-celerator is a good choice and just change the carb. The Holley avenger 670 is a good carb for the street, I,m using it now with a stealth manifold on a 327 stroker, the funny thing is that I also tried a Holley avenger 570 and the car pulled alot harder below 5,000 rpms but I couldn't get it to idle right on the stroker ,worked great on my 302. The othe thing to consider with a RPM and stealth manifold is they are 3/4" taller than a x-celerator . John Esbenshade
Will a 351 fit under a stock hood? How do you put headers in such a tight spot? I can't seem to make up my mind with the size. I did find out that the 302 I have has been rebuilt before. Is this bad if I want to add hp to it with performance parts? If I have to but A block, I think I will be better off with the 351. It has more power to start with for just a few $100 more. What do you guys think? I would like to have more than the 120 hp I have now on a rebuilt 302.
You basicly have a mid to hi rpm combination in you sig. Trying to back down by changing out single parts should yield a poor power performing combination. The heads are ok, they most likly signed off at about 6000 rpm anyway but the high stall becomes a problem. You need to cam for the range you want to operate in and match the converter for same as well as the intake and carb size.
Thanks for ALL the replies. I guess I am still deciding what I want. The predator is great at WOT but not soo hot in idle or slow starts from a stop light, then again niether is the converter but that is fun! I will keep the weiand and try the demon. I also ordered Performer RPM heads for the car. Will be a busy winter. Maybe I won't give uo the 1320' just yet... Scotty P
Scottys car and mine are like long lost siblings. I can tell you that a Victor Jr. will work nicely for you Scotty. Being as we have the same Cam, same stall, same gears, and same tires.
Going with better heads, then putting on a streetable carb... You will probably be faster AND more streetable at the same time. Dave
