It came apart, the spring popped off and nowhere to be found and one of the bolts stripped so I need a new assembly. What's the process? I've been meaning to somehow upgrade my steering column too. Maybe it's a good time to mention it. The signal assembly I've replaced twice and it keeps getting shredded. Anyone done anything to simplify the steering column?
Mo, that appears to be an aftermarket adapter. I'd pull the large nut, mark the shaft for orientation, remove the adapter, helicoil the stripped hole, then reassemble it. IIRC, the spring fits over the threaded end of the shaft (butts against the nut), is about 3/4" long, and fairly light on pressure.
In addition to " RASelkirk's " post, I will state that the adapter is also what's tearing up your TS switch! When you get it off look at the " cam " part underneath and see if it's got flashing or other sharp edges on it. I had one that came with a Grant steering wheel, that was a total pos! It was aluminum, the holes for the horn ring were threaded horribly, and the cam for the turn signal to return to off, had raw flashing and rough spots on it. That cheap fiber ring that the horn button sits over, constantly broke little pieces off, allowing the horn button to fly off in your face, and as you said, a spring hunt! I'd try to find the original hub for the sport wheel. It will have none of these problems and your horn will work!
that's a cheap grant adapter kit. don't worry about the stripped bolts - the base plate underneath is part of the kit. i'd recommend getting a 'real' steering wheel. gets rid of the adapter and may be better to handle. i'd get the ford sport steering wheel. a really nice addition to my car!
that's great guys, thanks! I've been battling this dang problem for 3+ years. Ford sport steering wheel, gonna look into it and see what I can find.
search for it on the board, here's a recent thread: http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=87810&highlight=sport+wheel great steering wheel, handles extremely nice, even in severe driving conditions. drew put one on his car recently, he's very happy with it, too.
I'm gonna try to look for that one, but seems to be a hard to find item. Can I use something like this, is it better than what I have?
mo check out my steering wheel and its adapter at the shop. you can try it on your car if you want. i dont need it for a while.
thanks will do, does yours have a horn by chance? truly realized the value of a horn when this #$#% woman just decides to pop out of her lane and almost drive right into me. I see her out of the corner of my eye and just gun it because I didn't have a horn!
it has the horn button. my car didnt have a horn, just nice loud exhaust to rev at people. i think button should work for you.
