While shopping for some auto parts today I ended up losing my key to my Mav..I luckily left my car open..I have no spare key except the key thats stuck in my ignition..I bought the car like and haven't fixed it yet..The ignition never engages all the way back so the key is stuck in the middle position with the everything on the car on but engine off..I either need to figure out how to get my key to come off my ignition or buy myself a new set of door locks so I can at least lock my car...SInce I have no spare key I cant lock my car and the only key that I do have is stuck on ignition..So I can't go out anywhere cause I don't want to run the risk of getting my Mav stolen I was wondering as well if this set would work for my 73 Grabber http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Door-Ignition-Lock-Set-Keys-Ford-Maverick-73-74-75-76-/350564522310 Thanks, Val
Was you car built AFTER 5-15-1973? This auction specifies that. I have seen differences in the ignition lock cylinders, and they are not interchangeable.
Your car was not built AFTER 5-15-1973. It was built in August of 1972. Your car was #275 scheduled to be built at the Kansas City Asembly Plant. Very early car. I would guess built within the first week of the 1973 model year. It would be interesting to see how many carry over 1972 parts are on that car.
So this set won't work for me right?I am going to order a Marti report this month...so there might be parts from a 72 that will fit mine?
Go get this set from Oreillys, the early 73 and earlier set. Then change out your lock cylinder with the stuck key for the new cylinder. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/LOC0/LC14040/03701.oap?year=1972&make=Ford&model=Maverick&vi=1132153&ck=Search_ignition+lock+cylinder%21s%21assembly_1132153_1904&keyword=ignition+lock+cylinder%21s%21assembly You will need to get another lock set for the doors. I cant find a new set that includes the doors and locks togethor. Here is the set for the door locks http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...r+lock+kit_1132186_1904&keyword=door+lock+kit If you buy both sets and take them to a locksmith they can make them all match the same key, probably easiest to make the ignition key match the door locks. Or they can take a new blank key and cut one side to work the doors and the other side to work the ignition. the Ford cylinders only read one side of the key, its cut on both sides so you can put it in either direction.
What shifter does it have now? What transmission does it have now? You should be able to look at the column and see if it ever had a shifter mounted to it. BTW, I have a set of used locks/ignition cylinder for your car, cheaper than buying the new kits. Email me DIRECTLY (see below) if I can help.
Thats what they were telling me at Oreillys that I was going to have to buy a separate set for the ignition and for the door locks....sBut youre telling me if I take it to a locksmith he can match them all up?
It has a floor shifter with a C4...Where the floor shift is at though theres a hole and I can see my tranny..Im thinking someone installed the floor shifter because there another linkage as well thats tied down to the exhaust which im think would be the old column shifter...Maybe thats why my key is stuck and never comes out?
Yep. You probably need a new ignition switch anyways. You could take out the door locks you already have, well take out one of them. Take it to a locksmith, have them make a key for the the door lock so now you have a key that will work both doors with just taking one out. Then have the new ignition switch keyed to match the door key. Or just buy the set of 3 from Craig if you can wait a couple days for them to arrive. I assume you are in a hurry, if so grab the ignition switch and find a locksmith.
If it is a factory floor shift car then the key will be locked in until the car is in park. There is a rod that goes from the transmission to the column. this rod rotates a collar in the column that tells the ignition switch that the car is in park and then release the key. just behinf the ignition switch there is a collar on the steering column that should rotate. grab it and rotate it counter clockwise. If it does not move the see if the linkage that comes off the bottom of the steering column in the engine bay is held up on something. Ive ran a floor shifter and just left the collar on the column in the park position so it would start in any position of the floor shifter, basically disconneting the column from the shifter. Can you take a pic of the shifter and the steering column?
Theres a linkage that got tied down to one of my exhaust pipes...It looks like it connects with another one that comes from my steering wheel area...Im charging up my camera right now and i'll post pictures in a little bit
Is there a thread that shows how to take off a door lock? And maybe I could wait for couple days..I've been driving my moms van around since shes away right now
SOunds like its a factory floor shift car. The linkages are disconnected maybe becuase they put an aftermarket shifter in the car. Did you find a part of the steering column that rotates? It would be in the area the the handle for the column shifter would be, behind the ignition switch. its the full diameter of the column and was meant to rotate when you shifter gears. Its what would not let you take the key out unless your floor shifter was in park. Rotate that part of the column all the way counter clockwise. if it wont move then take the linkages off at the bottom that are tied up. If you can get this key free'd up then allyour problems are solved because it probably still matched the doors.
