The PS sport mirror on my '72 Maverick slips down after a few miles of driving. I put layers of shrink wrap on the two pins to increase friction and help hold them in place. That tightened up the side-to-side movement but doesn't do much for the up-and-down looseness. Has anyone found a replacement part? Part # C9ZB-17687-A I've found used parts with the same number for a Torino but the mounting piece that's attached to the ball is very different. Guess the number just applies to the mirror and different mounting pieces were used on different cars using the same mirror. The mirror is in good shape except for the loose ball mount. Anyone found a way to tighten the ball mount? I tried tapping the rim around the ball to tighten it by that didn't work. Tried scoring the ball to tighten it in the socket but no luck there either. Anyone have an extra mirror with a snug ball and socket?
if i remember correctly, the ball assembly is held together by three pop rivets. i tapped them, that tightened it up pretty good.
I took a center punch and put two or three dimples in the socket. It made it tighter, but I broke the mirror when I did it> It's still not tight enough, it still slips when you shut the door. I think I'm gonna put a ball of clear silicone at the bottom of the mirror and housing to lock mine into place.
If no replacement is available, I'm thinking about a dab of non-hardening Permatex on the ball and socket. Might still be able to move it.
Had another idea. Maybe the mirror would stay in place if a spring put tension on the ball and socket. Went looking for a spring but didn't find what I wanted. I'm trying three coils cut from a heater hose collar used for sharp bends. (Expensive spring but that's what I had.) Wanted a smaller diameter spring. This one is so large its pushing too far out on the mirror and probably causing it to return to center. Anyway, I tried it. It helps a lot but the mirror still sinks a little with each of several slams of the door. Gotta find a smaller diameter, and stiffer spring. I think it will stay in place while I'm driving and the passenger door doesn't see all that much action. Will give it a test tomorrow.
