I have a 302 with a C4 and I have a transmission leak. This was my first trip over 3 miles and the transmission sprung a leak. Not sure where is leaking. What could have it broke? Rear of transmission is dry. Pan, bell and exhaust are soaked. It’s a good drip. Put fluid in and it drove and shifted fine but now leaks fluid. Background: car has less 45,000 original miles but sat for about 3 years after owner died. I drove it over 200 miles home in Nov and have been doing repairs and mild test driving like one a month (under say 2 to 3 miles at low rpm/speeds), and this was the 1st major drive I went like 6 miles then it started smoking and dripping. Any suggestions? Thanks
My experience with front pumps is it is time to rebuild. The last time I had one done was on an AOD in a 91 Ford truck and it ran about 1700 dollars but this was a full rebuild. I am not sure about C4's but I know they are considerably less. I know it is not much help but it is all I know. One way to save some big bucks on it would be to pull the tranny yourself. Bobo
that's where mine was leaking and it was the...front seal... Earl followed me home that night. about 50 miles and used 9 qrts. of fluid... Earl said when he got home he washed 10 qrts. off his car...
one shop that told me my pump was bad I had them get a new one. it just so happened that i was able to pick it up for them from the parts house. when i got there i asked about the...wore out pump. he showed me the worn one and when he showed me the new one to compare it...it had as much play as the old one....saved those $$$$s. just about all the C-4s I've had rebuilt I was told they needed new pumps....some did, some didn't....but none caused a leak.
the pump thing was explained to me as...when a converter, bearings, bushings wear, they send the metal through the pump, wearing out the pump housing. on a rebuilt pump the gear is replaced with a size larger gear. one shop replaced the gear with the oversize one... I'm just saying these pumps are like... serpentine belts...if someone checks it...you need a new one...
Called around, about $400 to 3000 for repair and replacement. Found a shop that will install a C4 w 3yr/5000 war for 1000 even.
Check the O-ring on te dipstick tube, and see if it is seated properly or torn. Check around the manual shift lever, and see if it leaks there. There is a seal "inside" the trans you have to replace to fix it. Be carefull with the kickdown lever.....they break really easily.
