Low Water Crossing During our summer when the water was lower, we could have driven it across the Rio Grande right into Maverick County at Piedras Negras, Mexico. (I guess that's the easy part). We still need to figure out how to get it down to Mexico from Brazil!
We still need to figure out how to get it down to Mexico from Brazil! ????? What are you doing Doug, standing on your head??? I have been corresponding with the guy. He says the car is complete and running, although it has been sitting for 2 years. Parts that are not on the car are in the car. There is some rust but I haven't found out how much yet. He wont be able to get more pictures till mid January. I'll keep you guys posted. Now for the real question, If by chance I do get it, should I restore it to original, or do the usual V8 restomod stuff?
From what I understand on their engines I think you would be best to restomod! was'nt the 4 cyl of german decent? and I remember the conversation about low compression engines, due to poor gas when those cars were produced. might I add I think it would be cool to have one of those cars here........get on it dennis, you can have it ready for the roundup right??....... good luck!!
restomod, think of the fun you could have doing that one.. you wouldn't like the 4 banger when you were done!! id like to see that in carlisle someday...
customs? Mavaholic, would you be allowed to import the car at all? I realize it is older but it still may require particular features like a purge canister or an EGR or whatever. Does it possess the same safety features as the same year US maverick (seat belts)? I can see it getting hung up in customs (or whatever it is called when importing a car) until the necessary changes are made. I'm sure storage in customs comes with a daily charge. Just a thought, did you find anything out about this when emailing the owner? Certainly would be unique.
I don't think there are any laws against importing a car, all you have to do is state that is is for display only or show only. You could just never register it. (Swapping VINS is a novel idea though, just say you took a 4 door and made a wagon from it). The 4 cyl is the old 2300 used in Pintos, Mustang IIs, rangers, etc. A T-bird turbo motor would be great.
That would be one hell of a road trip. Anyone got a map program that could figure the miles from Sao Paulo, Brazil to Annapolis, MD? I have been trying to call US Customs Service but they have been closed. They should be able to tell me what it takes to get a car into US. I contacted 3 different shipping companies that advertise global auto shipments and so far only 1 has responded with a "cant do it". Its not looking good so far but I will keep at it.
Alright guys, I checked up on this for you, now you HAVE to do it!! I called the california Department of Motor Vehicles---which by the way is the toughest in the country. There are several things you do: -You need importation documents -then you bring vehicle in to the dep motor vehicles for your basic safety inspection since it has not been registered here b4. -The car may have an epa label -but more than likely, you just take it to the bureau of auto repair--they are the ones that can/do certify cars for street use. They make sure that the emissions conform to that of the year that it is. If the emissions to not conform, then you modify it, then they certify it, then you register it---keeping the original vin and everything. The whole process is quite simple!! If you have more emissions questions, ask, my father is a smog tech. This should be quite easy. Do I hear ROAD TRIP??? Ask for some volunteers, get a truck with a tow dolley, and go pick this thing up!! oh yeah, some states have emissions free vehicles, CALifornia, everything pre 1973 is smog exempt. If your state is like this, the vehicle may be smog exempt, and you just may need the basic safety inspection. Keep us posted!
