Hi Everyone! Here's my thought... I was thinking about what I would want to do for my next Maverick, and I wanted to roll it around with you guys to see if it will be worth it. I would like to get a 1975 Mav because I prefer the interior over the early 70s Mavs. Never liked the package tray and would much prefer to have the glove box and the center vents in the dash. In my mind, it's alittle nicer. However, I would like to use the earlier style gauges (the greenish looking ones that go to 120mph). But my dilemma is that I don't want to have the big "park bench" bumpers on the outside. It makes the car look bulky and slow. I always preferred the smaller "mustang-like" bumpers for a sleeker look. So now, for the questions: 1. Would it be better (easier) to just get a 71-72 Mav and modify the interior? (this would mean getting a donor car for the new dashboard assembly, which seems to be more expensive overall) 2. Or should I stick with my original idea? 3. If I get the 75, is there a difference in the ratio of the speedometer cable verses the earlier years? (being that the 75 mav speedo only went to 100mph) Just trying to figure out what I want to do before I just go diving into it Any input would be much appreciated!! Edit: And Happy Memorial Day
Hi Andrew, I would think the easier swap would be the bumpers....just as expensive, but a lot easier than swapping the dash and getting new seats.
That was my thinking too. I know this has been covered before, but is it a major undertaking to swap the bumpers?
IMHO the bumper swap is not hard to do at all. Bumper swap easier than interior swap.... yes. But both are doable. I would go bumper first, or do a tuck like I saw on the forum...that didn't look bad at all. Good luck with whatever you choose. Tuck Bumper Thread. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=40251
Speedo gearing works off the output shaft. The only thing that effects the gear ratio, is the output shaft speedo gear that is matched to your rear end gear ratio.
Oh ok now I see! I never knew those gears were matched. Pretty cool, thanks! Does that same rule of thumb apply to all Ford trannys? AOD, C4, C6, etc? (will the same speedo gear work right in all of those, providing I didn't change the gear ratio in the rear end?)
the speedo gear is matched to the rear end. So 2 different C4's from the same year car with different rear end gear ratios will have different speedo gears in the trans.
