What is the best method for separating the ram from the center link and the pitman arm without causing damage? Thinking a pickle fork is not a good idea!

If you can't shock it apart with a big hammer, then one removal tools that push it apart might be your best bet. The chain auto parts stores usually have them in the loaner program.

Id spray it with penatrating lube and let it set for a while, then hit it from both sides with BFHs and let it drop out, if it dont drop out , put a torch to it and hit it again, after that it should tap out. Pickle Forks are not needed, they do too much damage IMO.

When I pulled mine off I dropped the whole centerlink, unbolted the castellated nut that held the ram in place. Screwed it on upside down so I wouldnt deform the threads and two good whacks with a hammer on the end of the nut and it came apart:yahoo:

I gotta remember where I hears/read it but I think that is the reccomended removal procedure for those units. But that is about the only way you are going to keep the ball mechanisim from seperating from the ram unit.

I used two stout muffler claps and a piece of ⅜" steel plate to make a puller. Take the ram loose from the stud end ( frame ) and let it hang down. I then drilled 4 holes in the steel plate so the clamps fit on either side of the center link. Leave the nut loose on the ram. Put the plate over the loosened nut. Tighten the clamp nuts evenly and the ram will pop right off! This method will keep the seal intact and put no stress on the ram! :)

I used a pitman arm puller and it came off very easy.
