i just got the mav running again last night and hopped in for drive today, everything sounded good and it was running good but when i looked down i noticed that the speedometer was reading zero even though i was doing 20-30 mph. i watched for the rest of the drive and it never moved. any ideas on how to fix it?
look behind the instrument panel and see if the cable is connected to the back of the speedo. If it is, disconnect it and jack the back wheels up off of the ground set it on jack stands and run the back wheels up to see if the cable is turning. If not take it out of the transmission and look at the gear. It may be stripped. A binding cable can strip a gear.
Check to make sure the speedometer cable is pushed al the way in the speedometer head. The locking clip on the cable end is broken on mine and will sometimes walk back out. I have to reach under the dash and push the cable back in the meter. If you ever see the needle bouncing 30-40 mph then that’s a sign of a broken (inner) drive cable
Does it have teeth at the transmission end? If the cable gets corroded and binds, the plastic teeth might just get eaten off. But falling unplugged behind the dash cluster is the more likely culprit. Be careful, that dash will bite your hands and make you bleed, so go in slow and easy, and come out the same way. I have several knuckles left behind in my dash.
Your going to get a headache if you keep head punching that wall, wait it only has to be pushed in im a idiot
The plastic tab that holds the cable in the speedometer head is probably broken off. Mine too. I "fixed" it by pulling the cable up thru the floor to put pressure on the cable and hold it in, then place a small hose clamp on the cable so it can't retreat back down thru the hole in the floor.
